Public school enrollment is declining nationwide. 🏫

As a strategy to stabilize or rebuild enrollment, a growing number of public school leaders have expanded their existing preK programs or added entirely new programs to the their district, and it’s working.

Pediatricians and researchers conclude that children who play outside and enjoy nature can be physically healthier, more engaged in learning, more positive in behavior and mood, and mentally heathier.

A Multidisciplinary Study 🌱

Metacognition thinking involves self-awareness and self-regulation of cognitive processes to improve learning and problem-solving ability. Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852), pioneer of early childhood education and creator of the kindergarten (“children’s garden”), believed nature should be provided in children's environments and that a child's interaction with nature influences their reflecting and thinking skills.

Amy Alexander, Milling Department Supervisor🌼

Finishing off the month of March, with 13 years of experience at Whitney Brothers®, Amy holds the third-longest tenure among all our women employee-owners. Amy joined the Assembly Department in 2013 and quickly established her value as team player by also working overtime shifts in the Milling Department.

In 2015, she accepted a promotion as a CNC operator position and transferred to the Milling Department where she was the only woman in the department at the time.

As her skills, teamwork and contributions grew, Amy was promoted in 2019 to the Lead position of the Milling Department’s 12-member team. The department flourished under her highly engaged, team-centric leadership approach, culminating in her promotion to Supervisor in 2024 and the FIRST woman in the company’s 122-year history to lead the Milling Department.

Early Learning is headed outdoors. 🌱

Washington, Maryland, Oregon and Colorado have introduced or passed legislation for licensing, pilot programs or expanding access to outdoor early childhood education.

New Hampshire and Connecticut plan to mandate indoor and outdoor play-based learning in schools. California’s State Preschool Program requires daily outdoor time including at least 30 minutes of daily outdoor time for transitional kindergarten (TK) and state-funded preschools.

Research and studies support that an outdoor learning can positively influence a child’s personal and social growth, healthy development, wellbeing and learning abilities particularly in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings. 💡📖
