Vintage MCM “Sun Coast” Bar-Hutch-
- by Drexel
The Drexel Sun Coast collection was designed and launched in 1958-1959 by two of the most renowned Mid-Century Modern designers in history, Kip Stewart & Stewart Mac Dougall. Even with a pedigree like this, the Sun Coast collection went down in history as Drexels greatest failure.
During the late 1950’s the furniture industry was under siege by clean danish-sculptural designs made of walnut. The Drexel Sun Coast was too “modern”, square, plain, and it was made out of hand selected, wild, American cherry.
After just one year on the market, this collections record breaking low sales earned itself the title as their “greatest failure”. During this time, Drexel had been preparing to release, what would go on to be one of their most successful and notable collection, “The Declaration”, out of fear of tarnishing Kip Stewart & Stewart Mac Dougalls reputation, Drexel not only killed this collection they went as far as to pull any remaining pieces from stores and showrooms to be used as design test pieces for designers to “create with”.
This Drexel Sun Coast bar hutch at the time was the biggest and most expensive piece in the collection, leading to it being the least purchased and least produced piece of all.
Consequently, this is one of the rarest Drexel pieces of all time, due to the short lived production and unpopularity. We have spent months searching, only to find TWO others that have surfaced in the last several decades.
This piece has not only received a fully documented, ground up restoration, it also features every single factory screw, hinge, pull, k**b, original record dividers, and most importantly the original starburst etched glass! Additionally, these almost exclusively came with a gold brushed bent aluminum bases, as you can see this one is made of solid cherry, only adding to its rarity!
You won’t find another, so come see us this weekend!
This piece will be available for viewing and purchase beginning this Friday at the Robin’s Nest, located at-
1323 W 13th St KCMO
