Thank you all very much.

Inside the former Wells Fargo stagecoach station on Third Street under the Broadway Bridge, one of Kansas City’s last old-school woodworkers is giving away his business to an apprentice who proved himself by working alongside the master for several years.

A little known fact about Rufus, the birthday boy, is that he officially ran for president back in 2008 and became the first dog in modern history to nominate themselves for the candidacy. His campaign was short lived however, after a slanderous attack add emerged wherein he was accused of being a low down, no good, hound dog; and that he had recently been a bad boy. He denied all of these allegations, of course and dropped out of the race. With those days long behind him, Rufus is an excellent shop dog down here at the shap and we're mighty glad to have him. Happy B-Day, Ru!!

An 'integral' drawer front is where the drawer box and the face of the drawer are attached to each other with a type of joinery. In this case, we used a lock joint with walnut and curly hickory.

We recently built a solid pine hutch for a client's kitchen. The design was inspired by 18th century Irish country furniture, along with Japanese simplicity and functionality. Since the piece is made of solid wood, extra planning went into the design to allow for the wood to move (especially in a temperate climate, wood will shrink and expand with the fluctuation of relative humidity in a space.) The back panels and door panels are held in place by dowels, which also create a great detail with the dot of end grain strategically placed at key points.

Currently gluing the solid wood edge to a circular veneered table top one piece at a time. The top will expand to accept two leaves. The edging is 2" wide and tall, and has a 30 degree back bevel underneath to reduce the visual weight of the piece. The base is up on the bench in the background. It was full of fun compound angles and joints.
