My latest restoration project:

Photo #1 The painting is off of its original stretcher and has had dust and grime removed from the back. Its lining canvas is on the left. It is a small landscape in oil that had quite a bit of paint loss. Photo #2 is backlit to show light coming through the loss areas. Photo #3 shows part of the process of filling in the loss areas. Photo #4 is the painting after lining, filling, inpainting, and varnishing. It was restretched on its original stretcher using its antique nails. The owner is not going to frame it so I preserved the original edges of the painting that would normally be trimmed. This made lining and restretching a little trickier.

Can't seem to get to my timeline. Hmm.

It appears that boredom lies behind the most creative ideas. That's why quarantine has produced some of the most entertaining activities. One of them is the Getty Museum challenge, that so many of you have already seen in our previous article here.

Working on this 5' x 12' painting with Barb Zaborowski. It is a survivor of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Our goal is to stabilize it, patch a hole and improve it's appearance by a little cleaning, in-painting and application of varnish. It is not feasible to do a complete restoration. The painting has multiple issues, not least of which is extensive overpainting with inferior paint. This painting is valuable mainly for it's history which I may go into on a later post. Eventually it will be installed in the ethnic center at St. Casimir, Cambria City, PA.
