Sometimes the pieces that end up meaning the most in your home aren’t the ones you carefully planned… they’re the ones that find you first.
Before the plans for our house were even drawn, Eric and I were exploring Asheville, North Carolina and wandered into the River Arts District. If you’ve ever been there, you know it’s full of creativity, old buildings, and architectural salvage that tells a story.
We walked into a shop filled with reclaimed doors, windows, and antique pieces—and then we saw them.
A pair of vintage doors with incredible detail and patina. The kind of craftsmanship you just don’t see anymore.
We stood there looking at them and realized something funny… we didn’t even have house plans yet. But somehow we both knew these doors were coming home with us.
Naturally, to help with such an important design decision, we stepped next door to the microbrewery (strictly for research purposes 😉).
One craft beer later, the decision was confirmed.
Those doors became the starting point for our scullery, and every time I see them I’m reminded of that spontaneous day in Asheville.
This is why I love incorporating reclaimed pieces into a home. They don’t just fill a space—they carry a story with them.
If you want to read more about how to incorporate reclaimed and vintage pieces into your home, I shared the full story on the blog.
