'Deep Purple' Dive! Well at least this Sea Turtle inlay would likely be the 'Highway Star' of the ocean byways. Ok, I will stop with the early 70' s rock analogies. I couldn't think of a better use for this large, gorgeous piece of live edge Purpleheart slab from World Timber Corp in Hubert, NC. The piece itself measures about 32" by 21". The purple hue is exceptional and really popped with a good dose of Odie's Oil . I used 7 or 8 different pigments in MAS Epoxies Deep Pour resin to accomplish the detailed patterning. I believe Matt and Jordan over at WTC may still have a few of these left! Slab flattening and shaping was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern. I just finished teaching my last CNC and Class and hope to schedule more. They have all 'sold out' quickly since I only have two students per class, so feel free to contact myself or Mo at Shop Class if interested. Weather permitting, I hope to be at the New Bern Farmer's Market this Saturday August 22nd. I also have a large turtle inlay, approximately 30' x 30" on display at Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. on Middle Street New Bern. Stay cool everyone and enjoy the coming weekend.

Elemental Muse: Great 'Taste' in Maine. For many years I have been heading to the coast of Maine for a summer break...regardless of where I was living . In recent years I have developed a friendship with the great folks at the Maine Tasting Center in Wiscasset, Maine. I appreciate the work Sara, Caroline and Bree do to support and promote Maine products, as well as providing excellent educational resources. This board represents the food and drink focus of their mission, while presenting a 'good taste is good chemistry' message. When we visit their campus, we also try to identify a local artisan to visit. This year we drove about an hour to Alna. Maine and visited the SeaLyon Farm, LLC Lavender Farm. We had a fantastic visit. Although they were not open for the day, Don came out and welcomed us while Marcia finished up in the fields. We had a great tour of their operation and bought some wonderful products! I would encourage anyone heading north to beat the summer heat to stop into either of these fine enterprises. The board is my usual Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert, NC and rough wood finishing was done at Shop Class in New Bern. One tech note....This is one of the few boards that required me to do some CNC work with a 1/32 of an inch bit....mainly to carve those tiny fork tines. Stay cool everyone during this steamy week in ENC.

USMC Devil Dogs! And finally the third installation in my series that salutes the various branches of military service. I am very pleased with the way I was able to produce and 'tongues of fire' look with the yellow resin in the red, it really gives it a powerful look. For those chemistry purists, it should be noted that there isn't an element 'M' that work well for this muse, so i went the Marines #1 design point, it ended up producing a very clean look. I don't have any of these available right now, the first couple I produced sold immediately. I do hope to have more soon, if you are interested it is best to message me and check., or stop by and see me at the New Bern Farmer's Market on Saturday. Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert, NC. Wood clean-up and shaping completed up at Shop Class
in New Bern.

"Elemental Muse: Dopamine" Dopamine is often referred to as the 'feel-good' chemical. I created this board for my friend Bethany who is the founder of the Bike Box project in New Bern, and works tirelessly at Rock Steady Boxing New Bern to help community folks with Parkinson's Disease. As a general statement. Parkinson's disease is caused by the death of brain cells that make dopamine. I support the cause when I can with my creative goods. The wood used is Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC, with wood planing and finishing accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern. I do not have any of these available for sale, but can certainly do a similar one if anyone is interested. I hope to be at the New Bern Farmer's Market on Saturday Aug 8, but will have to see if the weather cooperates.

"Navy Wins" Multiple weeks ago I posted my 'Beat Navy, Go Army' muse , and said I would be posting the rebuttal post soon. Well, over the last few weeks have reminded me that I haven't done that. So finally here ya go!, I promise to post the Marines one next week. The basis for this work are the usual suspects....Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC, initial wood planing accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern. All these board are available Saturdays at the New Bern Farmer's Market from 8AM to 2PM when the weather cooperates and I can set up outside. As a side note, all my CNC/Resin classes at Shop Class are currently full, if you are interested in a class just message me and I will set what I can do,

Elemental Muse: Dungeon Crawler Carl - Book 1. Well, if you are a fan of the NY Times Best Seller books by Matt Dinniman , this will make complete sense to you. If not, you will simply think I lost my mind :-) . This elemental muse salute highlights three notable features from Book 1. First, the colors of the 'Crawler' elements mimic that utilized for Book 1 cover. Secondly, the iconic boxer shorts Carl obtained during his exploration of the second floor. Lastly, the bomb simply depicts the thought that Carl created and/or deployed a large number of incendiary devices during his travels on levels 1 and 2. Given Carl's scientific creativity depicting this on one of my elemental muses seemed like a natural. I hope the fans at Matt Dinniman Fans đź’› Dungeon Crawler Carl appreciate the thought process. The sign is approximately 38" x 7.25 inches and is crafted from some high quality Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Huber NC. Initial wood finishing and flattening was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern NC. The images are carved into the wood using a CNC and then carefully resin backfilled and textured. I will have this piece, and many more of my muses, and other woodwork, at the New Bern Farmer's Market this Saturday from 8AM to 2PM. AND THEN....on to book 2!!!.

Dive into the 4th & Enjoy! Just a quick post this morning as we head into the holiday weekend. This piece was crafted from a fairly wide slab of 5/4 Purpleheart from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC. The vibrance of Purpleheart can be a little hit or miss some are just nice, others like this one, are simply gorgeous. The deep purple provides a great contrast for the 'tortoise shell' resin in-lay. This piece is approximately 20" x 26" , and is designed to be either a wall hanging or table top displayed. It is finished finished with Odie's Oil which does a great job of highlighling and preserving the purple tones. Slab finishing and flattening was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern. I will have this piece, many of my Elemental Musings sign boards and other pieces of wood/resin work at the New Bern Farmer's Market this weekend. The market has lots of special activities planned for kids and families...please make time to stop by from 8AM to 2PM Saturday. Have a great weekend everyone, stay cool!

Elemental Musing: Rivalries! I have said numerous times some of the best 'elemental muses' I create are a result of my friends and visitors at the New Bern Farmer's Market coming with their own ideas after seeing what I do. The creation of "Beat Navy" was exactly that! It took some time to decide on what was possible, and come up with some potential color pallets. The result was the format you see, which includes loosely mimicking typical camo colors in the resin. For those followers who are on the other side of the rivalry....look for the rebuttal next week. The wood used was Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp ...exceptional as always. Woodworking support from Shop Class in New Bern. As a side note a new session of the CNC and Resin class has been schedule for August, all earlier sessions are full. Weather permitting I hope to be at the Farmers Market this Saturday from 8AM to 2PM.
Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone.

The Autism Society of North Carolina mission states that it "improves the lives of individuals with autism, supports their families, and educates communities." Over the last four to six month several folks have mentioned that I should create one of my elemental muses to support the cause and offer visibility, and I finally got around to completing a project. I know there are a lot of interpretations out there, but for me it is simply about all the various pieces of the community coming together to provide support. I enjoyed using distinct and bright colors, it looks fantastic in person. This piece was completed with the help of the 'usual suspects'... Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert and woodworking services from Shop Class in New Bern. I will this and and a number of new pieces at New Bern Farmer's Market this weekend, and all week Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. in downtown New Bern. Have a good week everyone.

Congratulations Graduates! The Elemental Muses that portray various collegiate allegiances are always popular, but especially during graduation season. The UNC, NC State and Pirates plaques are always popular. I chose Campbell University Fighting Camels for this post because for the parents who worked with me to come up with something for their graduate in Chemistry were so engaged and excited. We had to take a little different approach but it worked out great. The wood is my typical Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC. Weather permitting I will be at the New Bern Farmer's Market this Saturday 8AM to 2PM, you can find my stuff at Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. 7 days a week! Lastly, just a reminder I am still offering CNC/Resin classes at Shop Class in New Bern, they are sold out through June but there is currently availability for July and August....small format, 2 person classes.
