Elemental Musing: Rivalries! I have said numerous times some of the best 'elemental muses' I create are a result of my friends and visitors at the New Bern Farmer's Market coming with their own ideas after seeing what I do. The creation of "Beat Navy" was exactly that! It took some time to decide on what was possible, and come up with some potential color pallets. The result was the format you see, which includes loosely mimicking typical camo colors in the resin. For those followers who are on the other side of the rivalry....look for the rebuttal next week. The wood used was Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp ...exceptional as always. Woodworking support from Shop Class in New Bern. As a side note a new session of the CNC and Resin class has been schedule for August, all earlier sessions are full. Weather permitting I hope to be at the Farmers Market this Saturday from 8AM to 2PM.
Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone.

The Autism Society of North Carolina mission states that it "improves the lives of individuals with autism, supports their families, and educates communities." Over the last four to six month several folks have mentioned that I should create one of my elemental muses to support the cause and offer visibility, and I finally got around to completing a project. I know there are a lot of interpretations out there, but for me it is simply about all the various pieces of the community coming together to provide support. I enjoyed using distinct and bright colors, it looks fantastic in person. This piece was completed with the help of the 'usual suspects'... Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert and woodworking services from Shop Class in New Bern. I will this and and a number of new pieces at New Bern Farmer's Market this weekend, and all week Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. in downtown New Bern. Have a good week everyone.

Congratulations Graduates! The Elemental Muses that portray various collegiate allegiances are always popular, but especially during graduation season. The UNC, NC State and Pirates plaques are always popular. I chose Campbell University Fighting Camels for this post because for the parents who worked with me to come up with something for their graduate in Chemistry were so engaged and excited. We had to take a little different approach but it worked out great. The wood is my typical Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC. Weather permitting I will be at the New Bern Farmer's Market this Saturday 8AM to 2PM, you can find my stuff at Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. 7 days a week! Lastly, just a reminder I am still offering CNC/Resin classes at Shop Class in New Bern, they are sold out through June but there is currently availability for July and August....small format, 2 person classes.

Musing on the Ocean Surf. Breezy days, warmer temperatures and lots of pollen, it must be spring. I am not sure why I opted for the tie-dye look but I absolutely love the color and pop this piece presents...it is gorgeous. The lighter Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert, NC is the perfect backdrop for this effort. I was very happy with the various texturing I was able to achieve. As usual the initial wood treatment and initial finishing was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern. By the way for those folks not on Shop Class's email lists I am teaching a small format (2 people) CNC and Resin class this spring. The first four sessions have sold out but there is availability in May, here is the registration link https://www.shopclass-nb.com/service-page/cnc-resin-class-0427026cnc?referral=service_list_widget . I will have this piece with me the weekend at the New Bern Farmer's Market this Saturday from 8AM to 2PM. Likewise, similar pieces are available at the Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. on Middle St in Downtown New Bern. Lastly, just an early heads up that I will be down at the Carolina Home and Garden in Newport for their monthly Artisan Market on April 12. Have a good week everyone.

"Sea Turtle Dive" I have done a number of sea turtle carvings over the last year, but this is by far the most challenging. Requiring of 7 hours to carve, and utilizing three different bit sizes down to 1/32 of an inch, it was a true test of patience. I also took a fair amount of time laying out this gorgeous Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC such that the ambrosia marks create a look of motion and depth. I am very happy with the final product. I have also done similar designs in Canary wood and Tzalam wood which I will highlight over the next few weeks. This piece is currently at Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. on Middle Street in downtown New Bern, I will have the other pieces with me at the New Bern Farmer's Market Saturday. Wood joinery and finishing was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern.

"Springtime" It is springtime and the daffodils are up...even in my workshop. I really like this new pattern. It provides great separation for the various structure elements, and also gives me a chance to work with yellow and orange hues that I don't do that often. All of the elements textured very well. This particular board is composed of some fantastic Quilted Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert, NC I was really able to accentuate the ripples with the Odie's Oil and some extra buffing. Much prep work and initial woodworking was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern. I expect to have this, and many other new pieces, at the New Bern Farmer's Market this Saturday and at the Community Artists Gallery & Studios, Inc. in Downtown New Bern. I hope everyone has a good week.

Elemental Ewes....This is one of my favorite projects from late last year. A New Bern Farmer's Market client wanted an 'agricultural' themed NC State Elemental Muse board. After some discussion it turned out sheep was one of the specific interests, as well as a tractor. I was really happy with the sheep texturing that enhanced the fluffy wool look. In addition, I textured in some brown tones in, especially near the feet area, to depict the mussed and dirty look the client was seeking. The tractor green and NC STATE red colors combined with the sheep to make a very vibrant piece. As usual for these pieces, the base wood is Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC. Finishing was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern.
Have a good week everyone.....stay warm!

Standing Tall! This was my first attempt at a flamingo, a gift for a sibling. As with all resin work success his highly dependent on my ability to texture the resin to match the intended subject matter...in this case 'pink plumage'. I was very happy with the feathery and flowing textures I was able to develop in the main body, as well as the different textures and colors in the legs. Enjoy the pictures. The piece is pretty large, approximately 22 x 12, carved on a single (ie not glued up) piece of Ambrosia Maple from World Timber Corp in Hubert NC. Wood prep and finishing was accomplished at Shop Class in New Bern, NC. I hope everyone stays safe this weekend with the pending lousy weather, I will be back at the New Bern Farmer's Market on Saturday January 1/31.
