On Juneteenth, we mark the end of one chapter and the unfinished work of the chapters that followed.

Homeownership has never been equally accessible in this country. Redlining, discriminatory lending, and exclusionary zoning left generations of Black families locked out of the wealth and stability that a home provides. Jackson County carries that history.

Habitat’s work does not fix that history. But twenty new homeowners — twenty families building equity, stability, and roots in this community — is twenty steps in a better direction.

That is what the 20 by 28 Campaign is for. That is why it matters.

From this month’s blog:

“A Habitat home is not something you are given. It is something you earn, something you invest in, and something that invests back in you and your neighborhood for decades.”

Read the full piece on the news page of our website. And if the ReStore is on your list this week, we will see you there.

New on the blog: The Path to a Habitat Home.

This is the full story — how a family goes from application to keys, what sweat equity looks like in practice, and how the 20 by 28 Capital Campaign is shortening that path for twenty Jackson families right now.

If you know someone who has ever asked how Habitat works, this is the piece to send them.

A question worth answering: what does it actually take to become a Habitat homeowner?

Not the short version. The real one: sweat equity hours, the application process, the closing day, the first mortgage payment on a home that is finally yours.

We are publishing the full story on the blog tomorrow. If you have ever wondered how this works, or how to explain it to someone who asks, it is worth a read.

When you buy a light fixture at the ReStore, you are not just upgrading a room.

You are adding to the pool of funds that makes the 20 by 28 Capital Campaign possible. The ReStore is not a thrift store, it is one of the most efficient affordable housing engines in Jackson County. Proceeds from every sale go directly toward the cost of building new homes for Jackson families.

We are at $1.4 million of $6.5 million. Every purchase moves that number.

Come see what is on the floor this week.

When Melissa set out to become a homeowner as a single mom in Jackson, the dream felt financially out of reach. It took two years, a leap of faith, and an entire village. But she and her daughter Natalie got the keys.

“The truth of the matter is, homeownership would not be possible for me without Habitat for Humanity,” Melissa says. “Habitat has given me my dream back.”

Along the way, she completed her sweat equity hours at the X-Change Teen Center and discovered something she didn’t expect: a calling to serve others. She now works there part-time.

Twenty families like Melissa and Natalie’s are at the center of the 20 by 28 Capital Campaign. If you want to help write the next chapter, learn more on how you can get involved with our 20 by 28 campaign on our website.

Most people know Habitat builds homes. Fewer know how a family actually becomes a homeowner through the program.

Here is how it works.

Families apply and are selected based on need, ability to repay an affordable mortgage, and willingness to partner. They are not given a home; they earn it.

That earning happens through sweat equity: hours invested in their own home and the homes of neighbors in the program. It builds skills, investment, and community at the same time.

At closing, they receive a mortgage at terms a working family can sustain. No subprime. No surprises.

That is the model. And every dollar that comes in through your donations or through the ReStore shortens the distance to the next closing day.

June is National Homeownership Month. For most people, that is a real estate industry occasion. For us, it is personal.

The 20 by 28 Capital Campaign is not a construction project. It is a homeownership story — twenty Jackson families who will have a safe, affordable home of their own by 2028. A front door with their name on it. A mortgage they can manage. A neighborhood to grow into.

This month we are telling that story. How Habitat homeownership works, who it reaches, and how it impacts Jackson county.

Follow along. Share what moves you. And if you want to be part of it, you already know where to find us.
