"Orrekong el bad"

The stone monolith in Ngchesar's old village. It was used to signify a leadership change when a smaller stone was placed on top.

Basilius the Portuguese navigator had probably heard of his country men's ship wreck in Palau at the northern atolls of Kayangel years before and their use of money beads to trade with the family who would migrate to Melekeok and become Udes Clan.

Basilius was a pilot for Spain's Manila Galleon. He would make stops in Palau and would eventually settle there. Guam was the main hub at the time. He set up an alternate destination for ships to sail to and trade. He brought with him Cuban mahogany seed pods from the Caribbean and planted them in Palau. When the trees matured the world powers of the time would come to Palau and could trade for the best lumber to repair their ships and to trade for crab, fish, and other goods. Even to this day the Cuban mahogany has been used to repair a room in Windsor Castle and has been expertly and beautifully crafted into Martin Guitars.

Basilius would be named High Chief Ngirakebou in the 1700's. One of the most significant leadership changes in Palauan history.

Continuing what my ancestor Basilius started 300 years ago has been my entire life. He brought these Cuban mahogany seed pods to Palau and now the trees are being made into Martin Guitars 🤙🏽🤘🏽 Let's put something GOOD out into the universe and inspire the world.

My newest painting is special to me. It meant everything to see and hold a beautifuly crafted Martin Guitar made with my ancestors Cuban mahogany from boards that I cut. 🤯❤️🤙🏽🤘🏽 300 hundred years in the making.

My last harvest of Cuban Mahogany in 2015

De Basilius was a Portuguese navigator that piloted a Spanish ship. The Spanish ships in the Pacific at that time were the Manila galleons. They would make round trips from Acapulco, Mexico to the Philippines with stops in Guam. This route was used by Spain for 250 years. For a short period in the 1700s a Manila galleon did not stop in Guam. Around this time the oldest Cuban mahogany on Palau are dated to. You could travel from Spain to Cuba to Palau. The Pacific Islands are full of South America Honduras mahogany but only Palau has the Cuban mahogany. He unknowing at the time saved the species from extinction.
