Where It Ended vs. Where It Started

Y’all, it is with deep sadness and also incredible gratitude that we have made the decision to close our Custom Cottage location here in Indianapolis.

When Rus opened this location in 2018, he could not have foreseen all the challenges, blessings and relationships that would form as a result of following the Lord.

This adventure has been fruitful. We have built beautiful furniture. We have witnessed the transformative power of God in the lives of our coworkers. We have been supported and lifted up by our neighbors. We are truly leaving this place as new creations.

We want to thank God for giving us this opportunity to serve Him. We want to thank Coleman Moore for mentoring Rus all those years ago. You’re our brother in Christ and we’re glad our lives are forever joined in Christ and craftsmanship. Thank you to the countless builders, finishers and the neighborhood boys who made our shop what it was. You’re the reason we did this work. Thank you for your dedication to learning and to excellence.

In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more information on a few already-built items you can purchase from us. Be on the lookout!

Please pray for us as we close up the shop and prepare to go where the Lord is leading us next. We don’t know what He has planned, but we trust Him, so we know it’s something good.

This Independence Day, we reflect on the values that shape strong foundations—freedom, craftsmanship & community. We know that good work takes patience, precision, and care. So does building a nation where everyone has the tools to thrive. Here’s to working with our hands, standing by our neighbors, and shaping a future that’s sturdy, honest, and free. Happy 4th of July from our family to yours.

Today we'd like to wish a very happy birthday to our fearless leader, Rus Lyons. Rus, you are patient, joyful and innovative. You love God with your whole heart and you practice humility daily. : Come rain or shine, we deliver! A few days ago, despite the cloudy skies, Rus loaded everything he needed for an install into our truck (which Kelsey fondly named, "Hank") and off he went to deliver and install this custom, sliding barn door. Also shout out to for an amazing lunch!

On this Juneteenth, we pause to honor John Hemmings, a highly skilled carpenter and joiner who was enslaved at Monticello. Hemmings crafted fine furniture and intricate woodwork—yet his talent was borne under bo***ge. He alone crafted much of the interior woodwork of Jefferson's house at Poplar Forest in Bedford County, Virginia. Unfortunately, his woodwork at Poplar Forest was destroyed in a fire.

As a carpentry shop, we recognize that our craft has deep roots in both freedom and oppression. Today, we remember not just the beauty of the work, but the resilience of those like Hemmings who carved excellence in the face of injustice.

The table pictured here is the one object that can be definitively said to have been made by John Hemmings. You can read more about his life and work at monticello.org.

: When you're self-employed some days are about marketing & sales, some days are about supply runs & some days are about building & finishing. Y'all, Rus has spent the last few weeks building an amazing desk. The special feature? Dovetails. These classic joints take a lot more time (and patience), but there's nothing like watching two perfectly cut pieces lock together without a single screw. It's a craftsmanship you can feel, and it's part of what makes a piece last generations. We love this use of dovetail joinery because strength AND beauty matter to us. It's one of those old-school techniques that reminds us why we love this work in the first place.

The is the which is a game-changer for cabinet building. There are so many reasons why we love this tool. It makes assembling cabinets faster & easier. It lets you join cabinet frames & panels using pocket hole screws--keeping the exterior clean & professional-looking. It also makes it easy to join the rails & stiles (which are the horizontal & vertical frame pieces) quickly & with precision. Lastly, using the Kreg Jig saves time.
