🔍 Did You Know? Proper Socket Weld Fit-Up Matters.
According to ASME B31.3, pipe inserted into a socket weld fitting should not bottom out in the socket. A clearance of approximately 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) should be maintained before welding.
Why is this important?
Allows for thermal expansion and contraction during operation
Reduces restraint stresses during heating and cooling cycles
Minimizes the risk of cracking in small-bore piping systems exposed to vibration, cyclic loading, and temperature fluctuations.
Improves the long-term reliability of socket weld connections
Failure to maintain this gap can create excessive stress concentrations at the weld root, potentially leading to premature in-service failures.
