Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen - Rice University

Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen - Rice University By working in close proximity to engineers in all disciplines, our students develop multiple perspectives on how to pursue a project.

The Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK) provides a world-class venue for undergraduate engineering design projects, with cross-discipline and cross-technology training for students at Rice University. The Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK) provides a space for undergraduate students majoring in bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, civil and environmental engineering, c

omputational and applied mathematics, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, materials science and nanoengineering, mechanical engineering and statistics to design, prototype and deploy solutions to real-world engineering challenges. The OEDK is a 20,000-square-foot space, which includes not only the central work area with over 75 work tables, but also conference rooms, a classroom, a wet lab, rapid prototyping equipment, large format printers, designated woodworking area, a machine shop and access to a welding shop. The presence of large engineering firms, such as National Instruments and Texas Instruments allows engineers to become experienced with the products they will be using once they enter the workforce.

Last week in Bologna, Italy, Rice University Mechanical Engineering faculty David Trevas and Roberto Dugnani hosted a beautiful welcome dinner for our students in the iSEED (International Summer Experience in Engineering Design) program. These students are hard at work earning credits for MECH 203/490 (Computer Tools for Engineering) and EDES 301 (Practical Electrical Engineering). Wishing our students an incredible summer of innovation, design, and discovery in Italy!

What a joy to celebrate our graduating Engineering Design Minor students and Student Leaders!

Families and guests, we hope you enjoyed seeing the makerspace where your students spent so much time and learned valuable lessons.

Students, remember that YOU are OEDK family, and the OEDK is another place you can call home. Your OEDK experience does not end with graduation. Come back to visit. Come back to judge Showcase (Yes, you can do that now!) Come back to pitch a project. Just come back! We wish you success in your next adventure!

Way to go Team UroVac!!!

Team UroVac from Rice Bioengineering took home a top prize for the second time this month!

The team, represented by Diane Moturi, won the grand prize at the Design of Medical Devices Conference, UMN for their vacuum-assisted TURBT resectoscope designed to minimize tumor dispersion and recurrence in bladder cancer treatment. This victory follows their recent achievement at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen - Rice University 2026 Huff Engineering Design Showcase, where they won the Woods Leazar Innovation Award for Excellence in Engineering.

In addition to Moturi, the UroVac team includes Angela Cai, Bryan Medina, Sanjay Soni, Mira Srinivasa, Catherine Stidham and Sam Zhang. Congratulations all on this accomplishment! https://dmd.umn.edu/2026/showcase-competition
