Since February of this year, I’ve been doing mostly custom bowls for people and organizations. With over 50 bowls made from ash and elm, I decided to make my last 4 cherry burl custom bowls before I take a much needed break to deal with some breathing/respitory issues.

I will be a vendor at Flannel Fest in Onalaska at the end of October. Nothing else officially scheduled due to low inventory. I was hoping for a November market but that’s up in the air for now.

Anyway, I ended my day today with over 4.5 hours of working on this monster cherry burl bowl.

This is one of the most magnificent bowls I’ve ever made-it’s also one of the largest. At 16” in diameter and 7” in height, it’s massive. Plus, very heavy. I can’t wait to see it with 3 coats of satin finish.

Now for a much needed break. See you in October!

Loaded and off to Artspire 2025 today in Riverside Park in La Crosse. The market begins at 10am.

Come down and see us. We have a great selection of handmade wood bowls and I have nice selection of my popular eastern red cedar trees. Plus, a small red cedar table all made from the same tree.

See you there.

Last minute additions for this Saturdays Artspire 2025 in Riverside Park. Steve’s Bowls is a proud vendor at this great event.

Here are a few cedar 3 piece cedar tree sets, three single cedar trees and one ash tree.
I also have this really cool small red cedar table. It is about 13 1/2” tall and 16” in diameter. All the wood and stump came from the same dead cedar tree that I personally harvested from my own land. It’s an amazing piece.

See you at Artspire!

I made a really nice set of 3 cedar trees today. This set is from the same log, so they share the same grain pattern.

I did have a scare turning one tree. This 1/4” thick piece that was about 5” long flew off. It bounced off of me on my left hand knuckles and struck me directly on my face shield right where my eyes were. This is why you wear a face shield. I was turning the blank at 973 rpm’s. It actually knocked me straight back from the lathe but luckily I was not hurt- just startled. It happened so fast and sometimes cannot be prevented. The lathe is definitely the most dangerous tool in my shop.

This set should be available at Artspire 2025 on June 14th in Riverside Park. Pam and I hope to see you there.

Take a guess at the wood species.

Hint: It’s my nemesis.

If you have followed my page for a while, you know of my love/hate relationships with box elder.

It can be beautiful wood, especially when there are red flames thru the wood. These pieces have just a touch of the red flames throughout . The red is caused by a fungus or disease within the wood. And just so you know, box elder is a member of the maple family. It’s also called Manitoba Maple.

It also smells terrible. I had a bad reaction to it earlier. It really triggered my asthma and i have a terrible headache now. I will be taking it easy the rest of the evening.

It did however make two very nice bowls.

Have a great holiday weekend!

So, as you can see, there is nothing glamorous about my finishing process. I simply find an open spot on my messy garage floor, kneel on the concrete and wipe my satin finish on. Now repeat this 2 more times and I’m done.

Plus, if you notice, I’ve started my eastern rec cedar trees. These 9 are already sold and are actually three of my 3 piece sets that I make. I also will sell singles, but the 3 piece sets are very popular. And, as many of you know if you follow me, these are my nemesis. I struggle making these. I have to be very exact with sizing in the sets since they are different heights. More thought and planning versus making a bowl. Making a bowl just happens-no real concept in mind. The piece of wood tells me what it wants to become. The trees, very different thought process and turning skills are needed.

Also in the picture are the first few ash bowls for a church group up in Menomonie, WI. The church had quite a few ash trees on their property that were killed from the Emerald Ash Borer. They decided to have me make a bunch of bowls for their members. Thanks to Jayne and David for bringing me the wood and for passing along my name. It’s a very cool custom job.

It’s been a year of custom turning for our business. I am going to be very limited in my actual Artisan Fairs this year. Artspire in June will be my first show. I will also have another in November in Chippewa Falls. I’m hoping for another in October. So, that’s going to be about it.
If there is anything your interested in, please contact me through this page or call me at +16083049251. If you want trees, get a hold of me sooner than later. I have a very limited supply of cedar and I usually sell out by the end of November.

Have a great weekend.
