A customer recently brought us a remarkable piece of our own history — a photograph taken on May 30, 1953, of one of our original delivery trucks.

On the door you can clearly read:
“H.J. Gelzer & Son Inc. – Hardware & Furniture – Phone 1051 – Hillsdale, Michigan.”
(Yes — 1051 was our phone number back then.)

On the bed of the truck is an advertisement for a Nationaline shower stall promising “Summer Comfort” for $48.45 — a product that would cost about $250 today. Even more special is the handwritten note on the back of the photo from a happy customer, documenting their purchase, the delivery date, and how our driver stayed afterward to help them move a friend. That small detail says everything about the way business was done — and still is.

Seventy-three years later, not much has changed in what matters most. We are still family-owned. We still serve Hillsdale and the surrounding communities. We still deliver quality merchandise — and we still believe that good service means showing up, helping out, and taking care of your neighbors.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our business across generations. We are proud to be part of Hillsdale’s story — yesterday, today, and into the future.
