Most homeowners REGRET these kitchen decisions.

Not because they picked the wrong style.
Because nobody warned them about the details.

❌ The appliance garage looks cool, but there’s no outlet inside.
❌ The dishwasher is open, and now the drawer next to it won’t.
❌ There aren’t enough drawers, so everyday items end up buried in the back of deep cabinets.
❌ The trash pullout is across the kitchen from where food is actually prepped.
❌ Small appliances slowly take over the countertops because there was never a plan for them.

These things seem minor during the design phase.
But they’re the details you’ll notice every single day once you’re living in the space.

That’s why kitchen design is more than just choosing door styles and colors.

It’s about understanding how a kitchen functions and helping homeowners avoid the mistakes they don’t know to look for.

We do this every day, and that’s exactly where experience makes a difference.

A rare opportunity to experience ARKA’s work in person.

On June 6th, one of our featured projects will be part of the 2026 PDX Modern Home Tour, a self guided experience showcasing some of the Pacific Northwest’s most inspiring modern homes, architecture, and interiors.

Designed by a professional lighting designer for herself, this home features custom rift sawn white oak cabinetry, integrated lighting built directly into the millwork, and a flush integrated Escea fireplace installation, the first of its kind in Oregon.

If you’ve ever wondered what truly custom cabinetry feels like in a finished space, this is the project to see.

Tickets are available through the link in our bio, including preferred pricing for the ARKA community.

Walnut cabinets look stunning, but you need to understand what you’re getting.

Walnut has a very strong grain and it will dominate the design. It becomes the focal point whether you plan for it or not.

Like most hardwoods, walnut has sapwood. That’s the lighter part of the tree, and it shows up as pale or almost white areas in the panels.

At ARKA, we do not use sapwood. We select and cut material to keep the color consistent.

Some shops leave it in to reduce material cost, which is why lower bids on walnut can end up with strong grain and noticeable light patches.

If you’re comparing quotes, ask how the final cabinets will actually look. Ask to see a door sample or real project photos.

Walnut is a premium material. It should look like one.

Stop wasting your hallway space.

This home had a long hallway that could have easily ended up with standard bifold doors and basic shelves inside, which is what you see in most homes.

Instead, we built large walnut doors with reeded panels, so from the outside it reads as a finished architectural element, not just a closet. Inside, it’s fully built out with rails, shelves, and pullouts, so it functions more like a walk-in closet.

It gives you proper storage, but also keeps the same material and style continuity with the rest of the house, which makes a big difference in how the space feels.

A butler’s pantry isn’t a must have until you live with one.

It gives you a place to keep the everyday mess out of sight, prep without taking over your main kitchen, and enjoy hosting without constantly cleaning as you go.

If you’re planning a kitchen and have the space, it’s one of those decisions you won’t second guess later.

This project is a masterclass in architectural problem-solving, transforming a disjointed residence into a sophisticated home for hosting and high-design living. While the original home featured beautiful T&G vaulted ceilings, it was hampered by a fractured layout, wasted square footage, and a complete lack of functional dining space.

Discover how a lighting designer homeowner and an architect, known for a thoughtful, out-of-the-box approach, use light, honest materials, and a restrained palette to transform a challenging renovation into a serene, modern home.

We’re proud to have contributed the custom millwork that ties it all together.

When you go with flat doors, add some texture — like reeded shelves or a reeded island. It brings character, and details are what separate an ordinary kitchen from a designer one.

Everybody sees beautiful cabinets when they are done and installed.

Not everybody sees the people behind the scenes who make it happen.

Every day in our shop in Hillsboro, highly skilled carpenters, cabinet makers, and finishers use their craft to build each project.

A lot of what we do is done by hand to ensure accuracy and a precise result.

It’s not only the machinery, it’s the experience, expertise, and attention to detail that truly matter.

What we do is more than just work.

It is the result of patience and genuine care for your project.

Not all custom cabinetry is the same. The difference is in the details you don’t have to think about.

When everything is handled in-house, the process is smoother and the result is exactly as it should be.
