No Tariffs Here
There is a lot of uncertainty about the impact of the tariffs. Some say they will cause higher prices, some say they will cause shortages, others say both. Economists will tell you that when supply and demand change, people will substitute.

Do you need a wedding gift, a graduation gift, or just want to add something special to your home but don’t want to blow your budget? Vintage shopping may be the answer. At Fifth & Fifth we have vintage dishes, glassware, chinoiserie, vases, hand-thrown pottery, Ivey Hayes art, hand-crocheted tops, purses, crystal, and more. These are great gifts that are beautiful, unique, and will last. When I got married, we were given some beautiful, vintage lead-crystal dessert plates. Thirty years later, I treasure them, use them, and think of my husband’s Godmother each time I use them.

Vintage goods have already withstood the test of time. They’ve been saved from the landfill. They are well-priced at Fifth & Fifth. And, they are not subject to tariffs.

Randolph County Pottery
Randolph County, North Carolina is a cornerstone of American pottery heritage, with Seagrove at its heart. Its natural resources, abundant high-quality clay that was easy to access and dense forests that provided wood for kilns, laid the foundation. The early settlers were German and English immigrants, especially Moravians, who brought centuries-old techniques with them. Jugs, crocks, and churns were a necessity in the rural, self-sufficient community.

By the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the railroad enabled centrally located Randolph County to reach broader markets, boosting the community’s reputation and identity for beautiful, high-quality pottery. Pottery became a generational craft. Families like the Cravens, Owen, and Auman families passed down skills and established long-standing studios.

Collecting hand-thrown pottery is about both aesthetics and functionality. A good piece will have a uniform thickness, balance, with an even glaze application, color, and finish. It may have slight rings in the interior, developed while it was being thrown on a wheel. It will feel solid, organic, and you’ll get the sense of where it came from: earth, trees, and the hands of a person carrying on centuries-old traditions.

We have some Randolph County pottery at Fifth & Fifth at Twin Deer Antiques and Design in High Point. Come see if hand-thrown pottery speaks to you.

It’s incredible what treasures our friends have tucked away in their storage! We currently have a stunning pair of Eastlake style chairs in excellent condition. Charles Eastlake, a furniture designer from the late 19th century, believed that furniture should be both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Some key features of this style include:

- **Carved Crest Rail:** The top of the backrest showcases a beautifully detailed floral or scrollwork carving, executed with precision.
- **Spindle and Turned Elements:** These design elements were often replicated in Queen Anne style homes of the same era.
- **Upholstery:** Typically crafted from tapestry or velvet, our chairs have likely been reupholstered in a lovely tapestry fabric.
- **Solid Wood Construction:** Our chairs are made from sturdy solid wood, likely walnut or oak.

Eastlake style furniture remains highly sought after, and this pair of chairs is attractively priced. Plus, they offer outstanding comfort! We invite you to see them at Fifth & Fifth at Twin Deer Antiques and Design in High Point. And if you enjoy our updates, we’d love for you to follow our page!

Why Pink Depression Glass Makes Me Happy
Most people lived their entire life without using nice dishes. While the Chinese invented porcelain dishes somewhere around the time of Jesus, and the Europeans finally copied their wares in the late 16th century, most people couldn’t afford such a luxury. Along comes the industrial revolution and in America in the Appalachian Mountains, many entrepreneurs were able to utilize natural gas to generate enough heat to make colorful pressed glass.

By 1929, there were over 20 companies producing 100 different patterns, in many colors. It's almost the time that this vintage glassware becomes antique. Unlike crystal or fine porcelain, depression glass is of marginal quality and I love that about it. You can often see small bubbles in the piece if you look carefully. This made it affordable. Quaker Oats gave it away as an incentive to buy oats. Movie theaters gave it away to attract midweek clients.

I imagine a typical middle-class or working-class mom during the Great Depression. She had a long list of physically demanding chores, a tight budget, and few luxuries. A cup of tea in a pretty, pink teacup that came with her package of oatmeal may have lifted her spirits. It lifts mine and I have an easy life.

At Fifth & Fifth we have a large selection of Pink Depression Glass. It’s still very affordable and it can still lift your spirits. Better yet, invite your best friend over for tea and cookies or wine and cheese and use your Depression Glass. It'll lift your spirits.

Franciscan Dessert Rose Earthenware is the most popular ceramic dinnerware pattern. It was produced by Gladding, McBean & Co, beginning in the 1941 in California. It is durable, with vibrant hand-painted designs. My mother loved that the handles are shaped like twigs. The popular pattern is highly collectible. Maybe it reminds us of our mother's or grandmothers. Maybe we just like it because it's pretty.

We have a this pretty dinnerware at Fifth & Fifth, and our prices are excellent! Come in and see what other deals you can find!

I recently met a collector on the hunt for uranium glass—any type would do. He wanted to add to his impressive collection of 300 pieces, all stored in a shed in his backyard. He even showed me a photo of his collection. I couldn’t help but wonder, why?

Uranium glass, also called Vaseline glass, is made by infusing glass with uranium oxide, resulting in a unique green or yellow hue. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, it fluoresces with a bright green glow due to the uranium content. These pieces were mainly produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily for decorative purposes and tableware. Thankfully, the uranium levels in this glass are low enough for safe, everyday use. Perhaps having 300 pieces in a backyard shed is perfectly reasonable after all.

Now might be the perfect time for you to declutter and make space for items you find beautiful, fascinating, or a bit of both. Perhaps you have Christmas ornaments that have been tucked away in storage for the past few years, ready to find a new home. As you start to put away your decorations in the coming weeks, you'll create ample room to showcase a selection of lovely, intriguing, or uniquely captivating items, with the rest temporarily stored in the new space you’ve opened up. It’ll be a delight to enjoy until it’s time to rotate your collection.

If you're in need of some lovely or interesting pieces to enhance your space, stop by Fifth & Fifth at Twin Deer Antiques and Design.

Get Some New Dishes!

When I got married three decades ago, many brides chose a China pattern so her guests could give her a gift that would last as long as her marriage. Porcelain dishes last a long time if nobody throws them.

Couples don’t do that anymore. Our culture is far less formal than in the past. We don’t sit in the dining room over a complicated place setting, with a confusing array of dishes, flatware, and glasses. Rather, we sit in front of the TV, tablet in one hand and a fork in the other. But that doesn’t mean we can’t eat on "the good China."

Porcelain was invented by the Chinese sometime between 200 BCE and 200 AD. Around 1271, Marco Polo discovered it, named it, and brought it back to Europe. Europeans set about copying it. Four hundred thirty-six years later, in1707, the secret of true porcelain was discovered in Meissen, Germany. Production of European porcelain began because people liked it.

Porcelain has a fine texture compared to other ceramics, is very strong, luminescent, and even has a lovely resonance. Bone China is even more durable, and has a lighter color. It takes color and fine detail beautifully, so there is no limit to the design. When we look at it and touch it, we like what we see and feel. It is nice to eat on. Many people never use "the good China," but we should.

Today, barely used China is readily available online, at estate sales, and at Fifth and Fifth. It is cheap, dishwasher safe, and might work in the microwave. So why not pick some up and use it? You deserve to serve yourself on a nice dish.
