Brent Goertzen has long had a passion for creating with wood, although his interest in the American craftsman movement began in 2012 when discovered a Stickley-designed sideboard he constructed as a dresser for he and his wife, Jill. Who would have known at the time this piece would not only inspire a full bedroom set of furniture and spark a remarkable passion for the craftsman movement and to hone his skills as woodworker.
This movement, which originated in the late 19th century, celebrated the beauty of natural materials and the skill of the craftsman who worked with them. One of the most influential figures of this movement was Gustav Stickley, an American furniture designer and manufacturer. Stickley believed that furniture should be simple, honest, and well-made. He developed a distinctive style that featured clean lines, exposed joinery, and natural finishes. His furniture was designed to be both beautiful and functional.
Brent has long admired Stickley's work and has studied his designs in detail. He enjoys creating reproductions of Stickley's classic pieces, paying homage to the American craftsman movement and to the legacy of one of its greatest figures.
Today, Brent's interests have expanded beyond reproductions of classic furniture, his creations continue to be influenced by the values and frequently integrates design elements from of the American craftsman movement. He believes in the importance of creating functional, beautiful objects that will stand the test of time. He uses only the finest materials and techniques, and he approaches each project with a deep respect for the history and tradition of his craft. In doing so, he honors the legacy of the American craftsman movement and ensures that its values will continue to inspire future generations of woodworkers.
