Do you know what the #1 most costly disease in the pork industry is?
Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)
"PRRS is a viral disease infecting sows and pigs leading to reproductive failure (abortions, weak and stillborn piglets, infertility), and causes pneumonia and increased mortality in young animals. It is a global problem, affecting the swine industry worldwide, and is highly economically significant: in the US alone, the total cost to the industry has been estimated at $664 million per year."
PRRS is primarily contracted from pig to pig via saliva, semen, nasal fluids, urine, f***s, and milk. If either parent is infected with PRRS, they will pass it on to their offspring. PRRS has also been proven to be spread by houseflies, mosquitoes, farm equipment, human traffic, & even airborne on dust particles for short distances. With no effective vaccination or treatment available, this viral disease is truly unstoppable. 😞
>The only way to confirm PRRS is to send off a blood sample for lab testing.
>The only way to get rid of PRRS is to cull it out.
Signs you have PRRS:
•Unexplained coughing, especially after weaning age.
•Unexplained abortions, stillborns, &/or mummified piglets.
•Pigs contracting pneumonia easily, likely deadly.
>Pigs with PRRS are still edible.
>They often show little to no symptoms when their immune systems aren't stressed.
>Testing is the ONLY WAY we are ever going to get ahead of this disease.

Awareness is the first step.
