We don’t take cats. But we made an exception for Leela and Kitty. 🐾💛
Paws Up Rescue is a dogs-only rescue. That’s how we’ve always operated. It’s what our fosters are set up for, what our resources are built around, and what we know how to do well.
And to be clear, we are still a dogs-only rescue after this. This was a once-in-a-lifetime exception, made only because it was urgent, time-sensitive, and separating them felt unthinkable.
Leela and Kitty came to us with a truth we couldn’t ignore: they are a bonded pair. A family.
Leela was adopted as a puppy in Georgia and has spent the last six years in a real home, deeply loved. Three years ago, Kitty joined the family as a tiny kitten, and Leela helped raise her. Kitty has never known life without Leela. Not one day. Leela is her comfort and her constant, and Kitty is Leela’s little shadow.
Their person is facing a major life change and moving into a situation where pets simply are not allowed. This wasn’t a casual surrender. This was love with no other option, and it is the kind of decision that breaks a good person’s heart.
It also broke ours.
As a rescue, we struggled with this one, because bonded pairs stay with you. And separating a dog and cat who have always had each other felt wrong.
The only reason we were able to say yes, even though we are dogs-only, is because Page stepped up as their foster and made space for them at Happy Tails Groom & Board. In a moment where there wasn’t time to “figure it out later,” she created a safe landing spot so they could stay together. That one act of kindness is the whole reason this rescue yes was possible.
A little more about them:
🐾 Leela: 6 years old, likely a shepherd/hound mix. Sweet girl, steady adult-dog energy, and housebroken. She’s lived in a home her whole life and knows how to be someone’s companion.
🐾 Kitty: about 3 years old, dog-loving, and truly bonded to Leela. She comes with her cat tree and does beautifully with her bestie.
They have lived in an apartment, so they can do well in a smaller space. More room is never a bad thing, but what matters most is a peaceful home and a family with the heart to keep them together.
They are new intakes, and they will be available for adoption soon. We are taking applications now.

Please share. The right home for this once-in-a-lifetime pair is out there, and we want to find it before they ever have to be separated. 🐾💛
