I had a family that lived right down the road from me , that wanted a table built from the corncrib that the grandfather had built many many years ago . The wood used in that structure at that time was reclaimed from a local elevator that was located on the railroad tracks in Granville . Pretty damn neat indeed! I had mentioned in an earlier post about all the work it took to mill these pieces down into workable elements , but I sure love the results of all that tedium. The base geometry compliments the extra width on the top , the hardware is a fine contrast to the maple and white oak as well . There is a mix of hardwoods on the top creating incredible visual character. The thick top slab on the benches flank this build pretty nicely with matching reclaimed hardware . Working with reclaimed wood has its challenges for sure . The biggest element is getting the materials to the kiln which stabilizes the materials and sterilizes them as well for minimal movement and any critters that may be calling these pieces home . Ordering or sourcing these planks require more board foot than one would imagine for a finished table . For example most of these hardwoods are so warped , twisted , and cupped that it often takes a 3-1/2 inch thick rough plank to get a straight 1-3/4 inch thick finished board . That , coupled with orders of rough materials varying from 1-7/8 inches to 3-1/2 inches in several different boards with respect to the thickness. That’s what we call planing day! So here’s where the old planing sled comes in handy , it takes something like this just to get a flat side to work with this stuff . So all that being said …..Here we have some incredibly beautiful locally sourced white oak . It’s ancient indeed!! With all of the efforts it takes to reclaim ,dry, and mill these Timbers for new furniture , it sure is incredible to have opportunities to build these pieces . This will be a gorgeous top !! A pile of old salvaged materials went into this little media cabinet . A mix of old hardwoods for the legs , vintage wainscoting , old iron , and a pretty sharp glued up walnut top to round out the tones . It’s hard to tell on the photos , but the legs are splayed out six degrees to the bottom to give it a retro feel to compliment the tactile feel . Lots of sanding and planing ..Cheers!
