These chairs started as a mismatched collection of hand-me-downs and thrifted finds… but to my client, they represented something much bigger. 🌈

Years ago, while creating a rainbow nursery for her first baby, she began assigning each of her kids a color from the rainbow. And somewhere along the way, those colors became part of their family story. Even today, everyone still has “their” color. ❤️🩷🧡💛💚💙💜

So instead of making these chairs match… we celebrated the chaos in the best way possible.

Finished using Cabinet & Furniture Paint in satin for that smooth, durable finish that let every color shine. ✨

Sometimes projects are about more than furniture. ❤️

This stained glass window came from Saint Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Fairdale, North Dakota, just down the road from the farm where my client’s mom was raised. Her mom and dad were married in that church, and my client herself was baptized there as well.

When the church was eventually razed, her grandfather saved this very window and passed it down through the family. Years later, it found its way into my shop covered in layers of paint and in need of a little care.

Instead of fully stripping it to bare wood like originally planned, I was able to carefully scrape, sand, clean, stain, and topcoat the frame while preserving so much of its original character.

I also had way too much fun creating inspiration mockups showing all the different ways something like this could live on in a home, hanging in a window, above a doorway, or simply displayed as art.

Projects like this remind me that sometimes we’re not just refinishing pieces… we’re preserving stories. ✨

Turns out being willing to make mistakes is a pretty important part of learning how to build things like this 😅

A piece I picked up months ago… started… stalled on… and honestly just wasn’t feeling inspired by. But sometimes all it takes is the right vision (and maybe a saw 😅) to completely change the direction of a piece.

I decided to modernize the silhouette, add new legs for a more elevated look (yes, I made the base and legs myself), and lean into a two-tone finish using Smoked Walnut. And let me tell you… this color is an absolute chameleon.

Depending on the lighting and surrounding decor, it can read charcoal, olive, bronze, warm brown… even almost black at times. Legacy describes it as:
“a rich energizing near-black layered with cool grey tones and deep hints of brown and bronze.”

The contrast paired with the natural wood top completely transformed this dresser into something that feels modern, moody, and a little upscale… while still letting the character of the original piece shine through.

And yes… cutting off the original base may have been controversial to some 😬 but I think it was exactly what this piece needed.

Before ➡️ After. What do you think?

What started as a “quick little flip” turned into rebuilding drawers, undoing old repairs, pulling approximately 47 million nails 😅 and trying to make mismatched pieces somehow work together again.

This little piece definitely tested me a few times along the way. Those are usually the projects that end up being the most satisfying in the end.

I kept the original wood top to bring back some warmth and character, then painted the body in Night Garden by and finished it off with antique brass k***s for a soft vintage feel. The best part? Almost all of the drawer rebuilds were done using scrap wood I already had in the shop because I challenged myself to not make a lumber run for this project.

From missing drawers and awkward hardware to a completely refreshed new layout… I’d say this one earned its second chance. 🤍
