Northwind Scout-N-Hunt

Northwind Scout-N-Hunt Our mobile state maps locate the 5% of prime habitat for the best grouse hunting on public land. Upl Research is the key to a successful grouse hunt.

Our analysis creates the following layers of information prime habitat and its relationship to a successful hunt, property boundaries, and GPS data. Habitat layers are defined by labels and color coded so the user can easily identify habitat combinations that are located adjacent to or near the "Prime cuts". By knowing the habitat near a prime cut makes it easier to anticipate where a grouse may

be located and also which direction the bird may use to escape. Scout-N-Hunt Mapping has a solution for every situation. Since 2018 iScout-N-Hunt Mobile Habitat Maps have been totally “offline” maps. That means you do not need cell phone service to use it which is perfect for the Northwoods and Prairie Upland hunter. We also offer GPS Grouse Habitat Maps for Ruffed Grouse. These maps can be viewed on Google earth and Garmin Units. The maps are created to target public land by state. You can buy one state or all of them. Hunt Smart with research driven habitat maps at your finger tips.

Grouse season is fast approaching!

You find three spots on your map:
A. Beautiful young aspen, but not much diversity around it
B. Aspen bordering conifers and thicker escape cover
C. Older cover with several good food sources nearby

Which one gets your first walk?
A, B or C? 👇

The dogs are getting restless. The gear is coming out. The maps are open. And we're all thinking about that first fall hunt.

Enjoy the long weekend and maybe sneak in a little preseason scouting while you're at it. 🐾🪶

Before walking into a promising cut, ask yourself:
Why should a grouse be here?
Not, "Does this look birdy?"
What does it actually offer the bird?
Food. Protective cover. Escape routes. The right forest age. Diversity.

If you can't answer the question, please ask.

One of the easiest mistakes to avoid this season? Don't make opening morning the first time you've looked at your hunting area.

Preseason scouting helps you understand the cover, identify several places worth hunting and have a backup plan when Spot #1 doesn't look anything like you expected.

I use maps to eliminate a lot of unproductive walking before I ever leave home.
But once you get there, look around.

How thick is it?
What's growing underneath?
Where's the food?
Where can that bird escape?

The map helps you find the habitat but sometimes the only way to know is to see it from the field.

August gets us excited about hunting season, but don't confuse August conditions with October weather. Temperature affects your dog and the birds.
When you're conditioning dogs do it early in the morning when the temperatures are coo. There will be plenty of time to put on miles this fall.
How's your dog's conditioning coming along?

Happy National Dog Day to the hunting partners who make every mile in the woods worth walking. 🐾

And let's be honest, watching a good dog work is even better than finding the bird.

Young aspen gets a lot of attention from grouse hunters and for good reason. But if you only focus on finding the "right" age of aspen, you might not find birdy grounds.
What's the cover like surrounding the cut? Food? Conifers? Wet cover? Older timber? Escape cover? Wide open?

August is when I start getting serious about fall. As you're scouting, don't look for just one thing in grouse cover.

Look for diversity: young aspen, thick cover, conifers, food sources and edges that give a bird an escape route. The more of those pieces you can put together in one area the better.

What are you seeing in the covers you're scouting right now?
