Our mobile state maps locate the 5% of prime habitat for the best grouse hunting on public land. Upl Research is the key to a successful grouse hunt.

Our analysis creates the following layers of information prime habitat and its relationship to a successful hunt, property boundaries, and GPS data. Habitat layers are defined by labels and color coded so the user can easily identify habitat combinations that are located adjacent to or near the "Prime cuts". By knowing the habitat near a prime cut makes it easier to anticipate where a grouse may be located and also which direction the bird may use to escape. Scout-N-Hunt Mapping has a solution for every situation. Since 2018 iScout-N-Hunt Mobile Habitat Maps have been totally “offline” maps. That means you do not need cell phone service to use it which is perfect for the Northwoods and Prairie Upland hunter. We also offer GPS Grouse Habitat Maps for Ruffed Grouse. Finding grouse and woodcock in the same general area isn't an accident. Both can use young, dense cover, but they're often using different pieces of that habitat.

You may find grouse associated with young forest, food and protective cover while woodcock concentrate closer to moist soil, alder and low areas where feeding conditions are better.

So when your grouse cover drops into wetter ground...Don't walk past it.

Your dog might find something different down there.

At Hunt The Habitat, we talk lot about hunting edges. But an edge isn't good just because two things meet. Each edge creates a different kind of food, cover and escape opportunity.

Young aspen against mature open timber? Young aspen against thick conifers? Alder running into an aspen cut? Different ages of regeneration coming together?

Start looking where the edges provide everything a grouse needs to survive.

Woodcock need soft, moist ground where they can probe for earthworms and insects. Look for moist alder, lowland brush, young thickets and areas along streams. If under your boots isn't wet underneath, keep looking. Woodcock hunters with the dry weather have you been finding any timber doodle?

A 10-year-old aspen cut isn't automatically a good grouse cut. Two cuts the exact same age can hunt completely differently. Why? Look at what's growing underneath and around the aspen.

Shrubs provide another layer of cover and food. Conifers offer protection. Alder can add moisture and feeding opportunities. Different timber ages create edges and escape routes.

The age of the cut gets my attention. The diversity tells me whether I want to hunt it.

You find the PERFECT-looking grouse cut. Right age. Thick stems. Looks great. You hunt it for 45 minutes. Nothing. Meanwhile there's an uglier-looking piece of mixed cover down the road with alder, conifers and hardwood edges.

Do you:
A. Give the beautiful cut another hour
B. Leave and try the mixed cover
C. Come back at a different time of day

Grouse hunting is a little like playing chess in the woods. The bird has an escape route. Your dog makes a move. The bird adjusts. You adjust.

And the thicker the leaves, the more options that grouse has to disappear. Are you and your dog improving your game this season?

First light doesn't automatically mean best hunting. Especially early in the season. Ann's paying attention to temperature, dew, and where the birds should be feeding.

Sometimes being a little later and hitting a cut at the right time is better than being the first truck in the parking lot. Have you noticed a certain time of day producing more birds this season?
