A little bright spot in the dark news this past week. I know gardening has amplified my reverence for life. I was already there as a mother and citizen of the planet, but coaxing something from a fallow surface strengthened my commitment to humanity and our planet. My garden “success” is due to trial and error for sure, but I also invite native species to thrive alongside the traditional non-native species, and, in the vegetable garden, I avoid any form of monoculture. Most of us know that we need biodiversity to save ourselves and this planet, but this notion extends to humanity. We need variety to thrive —in gender and gender identity, religious beliefs, political beliefs and appearance —to name a few. But there is no place for contempt and intolerance. Gun control yes, but we also need to counter this violence and rage with education, with conversation, like fighting against the trend towards banning literature for one, like voting for tolerance, and making a renewed commitment to kindness.
