Update from Tristan: For those of you who don’t know, Kellie and I moved to Indianapolis a couple months ago. Crazy, right?!
I am still very much involved in our family business, but there’s no denying the fact that things have changed. It’s not easy running a handmade furniture company when a major part of the operation now lives 1,700 miles away from the workshop.
Ashton and Kalen have done a tremendous job leading our team in Phoenix and making sure orders get built and sent out on time. Those two guys are not only talented woodworkers, but also damn talented leaders.
A few weeks before the move, we were asked if things would stay the same and if I was still going to help with the biz. First, things have definitely changed. And second, I’m still very much around and invested more than ever … albeit from a different state.
If there’s a point to this note, it’s this: We put systems and processes in place before I left, which helped mitigate the friction. Making sure those guys had the ability and the tools to run things effectively was super important.
If anyone’s interested, we introduced a the following tools to help keep us on track:
*MONDAY*
Ashton found us a project management tool called Monday to help keep our orders organized. I’d say this has been the single best investment to the back end of our business we’ve ever made. Not only does it allow us to organize our incoming orders, but also customize the
*FACETIME*
We knew this was going to challenge us. None of us LIKE meetings and most of the time feel they’re a waste of time. This changed the first week I was gone. Nothing terrible happened, but we quickly realized that without all of us in the same building, communication was going to change. We now carve out at least 20 minutes, at least twice a week for a FaceTime meeting. Not only do we get to hash things out quickly, but we also get to see each other’s smiling mugs.
*GOOGLE DOCS*
Everything from weekly meeting recaps to sales numbers to a long laundry list of to-do tasks go in our Google Docs account. Not only does this help keep us all organized and on the same page, but it also allows for quick editing remotely.
*SKETCHUP*
We’ve been using SketchUp for a long time, but lately much more-so. Allowing us to go from idea, to design, to finished product is so awesome. It allowed me to design our latest piece, The Bloomington quickly and easily. https://timelesswoodfurniture.com/collections/bed-frames/products/bloomington
I recognize these three tools can be considered rudimentary. But in all honesty, if used properly, those three tools are all we need to keep things moving in the right direction.
If you're still reading, thank you. Reporting from Provider coffeeshop in bitter-cold Indianapolis.
