Rustic Furniture Design - Nancy Hatcher Daniel

Rustic Furniture Design - Nancy Hatcher Daniel Build Rustic Furniture I turned the big 50 almost a year ago and I had been thinking about it for the entire year before the big day.

My 3 kids were all out of the house either starting their careers or attending college in another state. It was time for me to pick a new hobby. I searched the web and finally landed on building furniture. In the first year I have bought and learned how to use a wide range of power tools. I couldn't be happier with the hobby that I have chosen. I wanted to start this page to document my progress a

long the way. I have learned so many things, the 3 most important things so far are
1) there are so many great, patient and generous people out there that are willing to share their knowledge with people like me
2) you really can learn anything you want by watching a youtube video and finally
3) You are capable of anything! If you have any questions, please ask!

This was another one of those days that I just wanted to be able to start and finish a project in a few hours. It took about 1 1/2 hours to build and then it took another 1 1/2 hours to stain and paint - not counting the time spent waiting for the stain to dry before I painted it. It is painted with Annie Sloan Old White Chalk paint and the stain is General Finishes Java Gel stain. Both of those products are wonderful!

When Katie decided that she was moving into an apartment in Chicago I got so excited about the prospect that I could make her some furniture! I found this bookcase and I was so excited about building it for her, but Katie didn't think it fit the style she was looking for. Lucky for me, my friend was looking for a bookcase and loved this one, so I got to build it for her! She had a spot in her bathroom between her sink and bathtub that she had been looking for some kind of shelving and everything was either too big or too small. That is the thing I love about building furniture - it allows you to custom fit everything to the space it is for!

I found this bookcase somewhere on the internet but I can't remember where - so if anyone knows where it is from, please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due.

Let me start this photo album by telling you that when I first started building furniture I spent hours and hours on the computer going from one page to another page. Somewhere along the way I found Rustic Duck Furniture's page. She is located in Canada and she is absolutely wonderful. Her work is so inspiring! My friend wanted a sofa table and I jumped at the chance to make her one! I fell in love with this table when I saw it on Rustic DuckFurniture's page and my friend agreed. There weren't any plans on her page so I had to work off of the picture. My friend loved it so much that she didn't want to hide it behind her sofa and I agree.

The title to this photo album says it all! This is the FIRST build I ever did! I saw it on pinterest and fell in LOVE with it! It really is the perfect end table. The length and width of it make it PERFECT! The plan is from Jen Woodhouse (Can you believe that her last name is Woodhouse? That would be like a dentist having the last name Payne or a tailor having the last name of Taylor!) Jen has a wonderful site where she gives step by step instructions and offers building plans. Here is the link to the plans for THE PERFECT END TABLE http://jenwoodhouse.com/diy-perfect-end-table/

The majority of the time when I am building something it can take days or even weeks to complete! It is usually not because the build is really complex but because finding the time to work on it can be hard to come by. If something takes 25 hours to build it can take 12 days to find the total time to build it. So every now and then I want a small project that I can do in a few hours! This is one of those builds. It was so simple and I had all of the wood on hand - mostly using scraps. Here is the link to the plans that Shades of Blue Interiors made to go along with their table http://www.shadesofblueinteriors.com/makeover-monday-small-x-end-table-free-plans/ If you have not liked her page - you should!!

The 24 hours does not refer to when it is used - it refers to the time Taylor Daniel was home for a visit and the day before he was scheduled to go back his roommate sent him a text telling him that their coffee table had broken. He asked me if I could make one for him to take back. I got the plans from the lovely Ana White! Here is the link to the plans http://www.ana-white.com/2012/07/plans/rustic-x-coffee-table

Katie Marie Daniel also picked out this really cool desk that she saw on pinterest. We couldn't find the original post anywhere or any plans for the desk, so like I did with the media console - I had to work off of the picture. It was fun to make and I really think it is one of the coolest desk that I have seen.

My daughter, Katie Marie Daniel was moving into an apartment in Chicago where she attends Columbia College. She fell in love with Urban Outfitters Micah Media Console. I only had the picture to work off of. I made it out of Purebond Birch Plywood. Katie Marie Daniel loves it and I do too!
