Meet Chase, one of our Fire Safety Engineers helping keep homeowners safe from hidden electrical fire hazards. ⚡

Before joining Ting, Chase worked as an electrician — experience he now brings to every customer conversation and hazard investigation. Here’s what he shared with us:

“As a former electrician, getting to speak with other electricians as they walk through customers' homes to help mitigate hazards is most exciting for me.”

From helping identify hidden hazards to working alongside electricians to help solve them, Chase plays an important role in helping keep families and homes safer every day. Thank you for all you do, Chase!

Ting detects the problem. Electricians help fix it. ⚡️

"We received a notification from Ting about a fire hazard. With the help of the Ting team, our electrician was able to pinpoint the exact outlet which was causing the alert. He discovered burnt wiring in the outlet and was able to repair it. Even the electrician was amazed at the accuracy of Ting. I'm very grateful that we were able to avoid a potential house fire thanks to Ting!" – Matthew P. in Maryland.

Turtle Trouble 🐢 When Bob received a fire hazard alert in his Ting app, our Fire Safety Team connected with him right away. Together, they traced the source of arcing to a heat lamp in his turtle’s tank—caught early and resolved to help keep both his home and his pet safe. He shared with us:

“We found it quickly before any issues were caused. The Ting team was very informative and knowledgeable about the situation.”

That outlet that won’t hold a plug? It can be one of those ‘future me will handle it’ problems, but it shouldn’t be.

Outlets are designed to hold plugs firmly in place. If plugs are slipping or sagging out of the sockets, it usually means there’s a loose connection. This can cause dangerous arcing or glowing electrical hazards that produce significant heat resulting in melted or charred outlets, damaged wiring insulation, and greatly increased potential to ignite surrounding wall materials."

If you notice an outlet doing this, stop using it and have a qualified electrician take a closer look. A good rule of thumb is to upgrade your outlets about every 20 years. Between technology, design, and usage, all receptacles become outdated and can form dangerous loose connections like this.

This extension cord had already taken some serious damage. The outlet it was plugged into told the rest of the story.

This Ting customer received a fire hazard alert for arcing detected. Working with our Fire Safety Team, the signals were narrowed down to an outdoor outlet where both sockets were burnt, including an extension cord plugged in. An electrician replaced the outlet and the arcing signals resolved.

As outdoor outlets get more use at this time of year, a quick check before plugging in can go a long way.
