Sometimes the smallest details carry the biggest stories.

A special thank you to a dear friend and colleague who thought of me during her summer travels and brought back this beautiful Hepplewhite-style drawer pull she discovered while visiting an architectural salvage shop.

Hepplewhite furniture is known for its refined proportions, delicate ornamentation, and distinctive hardware. Details like this are part of what makes historic furniture design so fascinating and continue to inspire the restoration and design work we do at TBDesign.

Thank you for the thoughtful gift, and especially for knowing me well enough to realize that an old drawer pull would absolutely make my day.

Our latest journey gave us the opportunity to bring three restored, custom pieces to their new homes across Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama.

Traveling through the Appalachian Mountains made this delivery one to remember. The winding roads and changing landscape presented a few challenges along the way, but they also reminded us that the journey is part of each piece’s story.

A hard fall could have ended the story of this century-old Jacobean Revival chair.

Instead, it came to the TBDesign workshop.

The damage was more than cosmetic. The chair had suffered a serious structural break, which meant the repair had to do two things at once: restore its strength and preserve the craftsmanship that made it worth saving in the first place.

We carefully realigned the fractured area, reinforced it internally with hardwood dowels, bonded and clamped the break, and rebuilt the small areas of oak that had been lost. The carved details around the repair were restored by hand so the new work followed the original design rather than competing with it.

The final challenge was color.

Freshly repaired oak does not age the same way century-old wood does, so the repair was hand-toned and blended into the existing patina. The goal was never to make the chair look new.

It was to make the damage disappear without erasing the years that came before it.

That is the difference between repairing furniture and restoring it.

This chair still carries its age, its craftsmanship, and its history. Now it can carry someone through the next chapter too.

This weekend, TBDesign is on the road.

What started in our Bowling Green workshop is moving through six communities across four states, with nearly 1,200 miles logged carrying restored furniture to its next chapters.

From Bowling Green, Kentucky, the journey continued to Louisville, Kentucky, then east to Lynchburg, Virginia, before heading back through Knoxville, Tennessee, Cookeville, Tennessee, and Meridianville, Alabama.

Along the way, there have been highways, fuel stops, small towns, conversations, customers, and a lot of miles. But the trip has never really been just about moving furniture.

It is about the stories these pieces already carry and the people who choose to continue them.

Bowling Green → Louisville → Lynchburg → Knoxville → Cookeville → Meridianville

Six communities. Four states. Nearly 1,200 miles. One trailer full of stories finding their way home.

We recently took in two extraordinary historic pieces entrusted to us by new clients. Passed down through their family for two generations, one of these solid red oak pieces traces back to Missouri—crafted with remarkable flush joinery, dovetail details, and a deeply significant history.
