My first timber frame back in 2004. At 12' x 16' with loft, & framed in hickory, rock maple & white oak, this sturdy little beast became my first workshop. It would make a fine hunting cabin, or modified a bit & left open to create a rustic backyard pavilion. Can be enlarged to suit your preferences. More info @ www.squarepegtimberjoinery.com.

My 2nd "kingpost-truss" timber frame within a 2 yr period, raised on a beautiful September morning in Gustavus, Ohio back in 2014. This historic truss system, with elements replicated from the 1769 Christ Episcopal Church, Shrewsbury, NJ, allowed a clear-span in this great-room addition without any interior support posts. All the beautiful finish-work in the 1st pic is the result of the incredible craftsmanship of Jim Wakefield, and that's him setting purlins in the 3rd pic.

Log home project I did back in 2015 for Tim Ebert (hey Tim!) in Wisconsin. 1st pic is a trial assembly I did in my yard to check fit of the dovetail notches and make sure log elevations matched up with drawings. 3rd pic is a joist-carrying tie beam dovetailed into a wall-log. And the finished cabin is ALL the work of Tim Ebert. Roof, windows, doors, porch, all interior work, etc, Tim did it all by himself. Much props to you my friend!!

My handy-dandy "beam wrench". This sweet little bu**er lets me easily (well not easily) turn 700 lb logs and timbers while keeping all surfaces looking purdy. One end has an 8" opening and the other end is for 12" timbers. I can add small cleats on the inside of those forks to turn smaller timbers.

Central to the nature of what I do in heavy timber carpentry is my strong belief in the early traditions of the crafts of timber framing and log building, and honoring the term "craft" with the hand-tools of the past in "handcrafting" all wood-to-wood timber joinery. The sequence of pics show how I bore a mortise: My 1880's hand-crank beam drill boring a vertical series of 2" holes, then wood removal on ends & sides with mallet & chisel to create a rectangular mortise.

Sweet timber frame mailbox post I did for a great guy (Jayson Taylor) in Aurora Ohio. Framed in black cherry timbers and incorporating a signature element found in Dutch barns of the Hudson Valley area of NY, that being the extended anchor beam tenon in rear with double tapered white oak wedges.

Black cherry timbers, chosen primarily for their rot-resistance & then also their beautiful color, frame this (soon to be roofed) entryway with kingpost trusses (non-structural) front & rear. English Tying Joints where post top, tie beam & top plate converge.
