“Mary, I think I’m bisexual.”
“No, Freddie, you’re gay.”
With these two sentences, one of the most endearing romances in pop history came to an end: the love story of two young people—Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin—who shared everything until one of them stopped fooling himself.
This pivotal scene, depicted in the film 𝐁𝐨𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐲, took place in 1976 at Mercury’s home in London’s Kensington neighborhood. By then, they had been in a relationship for six years. The two had met years earlier at the local street market, where Freddie and drummer Roger Taylor sold second-hand clothing. Although there was no instant spark, fate had other plans. 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯: “𝘐𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘪𝘮,” she later confessed in a 1999 interview with the 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐥. 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘥, “𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘐’𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦.”
At the start of their relationship, they lived together in a room rented for £10 a week on Victoria Road. 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥, “𝘞𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴, 𝘴𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮. 𝘞𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘦.”
It wasn’t long, however, before she witnessed Queen’s meteoric rise firsthand. In fact, some of the photographs for Queen’s first album were taken in their new flat on Holland Drive, secured after the band signed their record deal. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, but Austin soon began to feel distanced. 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥, “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘱. 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵, ‘𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳. 𝘏𝘦’𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦.’”
Yet Mercury seemed reluctant to lose her. On Christmas Day in 1973, he proposed. 𝐇𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐱, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐱, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐈 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐱. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠.
By 1976, Austin knew Mercury had been in relationships with men. She decided to help him face his truth. The next day, she moved out, ending their romantic relationship but not their friendship. Freddie ensured her security, purchasing a £300,000 apartment for her.
When Mercury contracted HIV years later, she was the first to know. 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥, “𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩. 𝘏𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥, ‘𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺, 𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵.’” He passed away peacefully, with Austin by his side.
Freddie left her half of his fortune and his mansion, along with his ashes, whose resting place she has kept secret to this day.
