Important info:

IRS to phase out paper tax refund checks starting with individual taxpayers

IR-2025-94, Sept. 23, 2025 — The Internal Revenue Service, working with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, today announced that paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers will be phased out beginning on Sept. 30, 2025, as required by Executive Order 14247, to the extent permitted by law.

This means if you do not have a bank account, Cash App or other electronic account, you need to get one before you file your taxes this year. It can also be a prepaid Visa or Mastercard The electronic account must have a routing number and account number.

Taxpayers should make sure they know their bank info or open a free or low cost account. Visit FDIC: Get banked or MyCreditUnion for account options.

MyCreditUnion.gov is a financial education resource focused on the non-profit credit union industry from the National Credit Union Administration to help you manage and protect your money.
