Finally finished this quilt! (Yes it’s a Christmas quilt… and yes it’s May…) but I totally wanted to have it finished this year as I’m changing my focus away from crafting and furniture to other endeavors.

I made up this pattern from star blocks and tree blocks… designed it on excel, and pieced it all together. It’s a little unconventional… but that’s a lot like every thing else I do and I love how it turned out!

This apartment was a team effort, and I’m so grateful for the friends who were able to move the furniture in and to everyone who donated!
I spoke with an amazing refugee friend yesterday who shared some of the heartache she experienced in her country.

She talked about human trafficking, people in jail because they “aren’t Muslim enough”, starvation, no one can get jobs, and so much violence.
She said, “I’m smiling because I feel so much peace here, but my heart hurts for may family who are still there.”
Sometimes it hard to see that there is so much heartbreak in the world.

But that’s why these apartments feel like a win. Because there is peace for them in this country.

And hope.

We saw two miracles happen with this apartment! First, when we got to the storage unit we learned that we didn’t have access to the moving truck. Luckily, a friend had her suburban there and we were able to fit the entire apartment furniture and supplies into three vehicles! It felt like a “loaves and the fishes” type of miracle and I still can’t believe it! (It also makes me want a suburban!! I was drooling over that cargo space!!)
Then we got to the apartment only to find out the lease hadn’t been signed and we didn’t actually have an apartment! As we were all waiting there trying to decide what to do, RST called and said there was another family who had just moved in and had nothing. They even had the same number of people as we had items for! So we drove out to them and unloaded!
This family had been trying to get to America for 2 years, and were very nervous about sitting in their apartment with no beds or food or anything! The baby girl was so excited to play with the toys we brought. And we are so grateful to have had it all turn out so well.

God is in the details of this work! And while it almost always requires some quick thinking and a little faith, it’s incredible to see how much He truly loves these people!

Thank you for all of the furniture, supplies and support you are giving us! We truly couldn’t do it without you!!

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!!

I believe that God loves the refugees and his hand is in this work, even if there are miserable parts of it. Like driving 2 hours to get 3 free beds and having difficulties putting them together. Or working around bugs.
It’s the little things like praying for angels to lift me since I’d been up all night with my daughter, then having people just show up to help! Or not having enough furniture and supplies two days before and then having others call and miraculously offer the very items we’re missing! Miracles are happening everywhere, we just have to see them! And that’s why I know that God loves these people… because he’s helping us help them. I can’t take credit for any of this… but feel so blessed to be able to set up a new home others to rest in!

Thank you to everyone who donated time, money and items to support this family!

Finally finished!! Here is the before and after on my kitchen table refinish project! It took about a month, but it’s done and I love it!!

🌻I used Orange Stripper to remove the top coat and stain then did a light sand to remove the residue.
🌻Next I used Zinsser Wood Bleach to make it lighter, then did several layers of stain and whitewash until I got the look I wanted.
🌻I used the wrong topcoat, but then figured out that General Finishes High Performance Top Coat was better and did 5 coats sanding between each coat.
🌻I finished with a 1000 grit sandpaper that made it butter smooth, and let it cure for 3 weeks.

The mattress for our last apartment was supposed to have been delivered Thursday, so I almost died when we showed up Friday to no mattress. We were picking up the family that day! RST told us to go ahead and pick up the family and they would have it delivered that afternoon.
The family was so surprised to see how beautiful the apartment was! They said they didn’t expect that and began to tear up. The wife hugged me so hard! They asked us to pass on their appreciation to everyone who was a part of it! It took them 6 months to finally make it to their new home. Feeling so blessed to be a tiny part of their story!
And miraculously, the mattress was delivered later that day!

Sometimes I feel selfish because of how much I enjoy setting these refugee apartments up! It’s like paying with my doll house again, except that I get to play with all of these beautiful pieces that were donated with such love!

There’s a lot of joy in taking an item that someone doesn’t want and putting in the hands of someone who really needs it!

Refugee Services of Texas is trying to set up 25 families this month! I guess our summer slump is over! did 4 set ups over the last week!! Those girls are machines!! These are pics from the one I got to help with today.

Lots of spiders at this simple refugee apartment for a family of 4. Made my skin crawl. But check out the details on the gorgeous quilts someone donated! So beautiful!

I don’t get to know the story of each refugee family that comes through, but I can typically infer a few things. This apartment went to family of 8. The youngest are a set of twins who are only 1 year old. I know how stressful it is to move with infant twins, but to add war and fear to the chaos just makes my heart break for this momma! It was one year ago that Biden pulled the troops out.

Feeling blessed to get to play with so many beautiful donations and give this family a safe place to rest. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped! It truly means so much to these families!

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had any refugee apartments, so we were so excited to finally get to help with one today!
A sweet lady in our church offered these bunk beds. They were an answer to prayers! Another friend gave us the gorgeous quilt from her mother. It was hand sewn by the Amish women in Pennsylvania. So gorgeous!
And my daughter set a goal this summer to paint a picture for a refugee apartment. It was fun to put it here.
I love watching how all of the little donations, given with so much love, create such a beautiful home!
