A turkey’s putt is more than just the sound of nature – it is a communication system to fellow turkeys. A sharp, high-pitched "putt" is a turkey’s version of a loud emergency siren. It’s a specific warning call used to tell the rest of the flock that danger is nearby. While you might hear it just once, it usually comes out as a fast, frantic string of notes that lets everyone know it’s time to get moving.

For a hunter, hearing that sound means your window of opportunity is slamming shut. If you’ve got a gobbler in your sights and you hear the “alarm putt,” he’s already been warned of danger and is a split second away from vanishing into the brush. You can’t afford to wait for a perfect angle or a better view. If you hear that alarm, take your shot as soon as you have a clear opening, or you'll be left looking at an empty field.
