𝗛𝗼𝘄’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴? 😄

Today’s project starts with me painting a table leaf 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡. 💚

Yes, really. 😂

The existing wood has a strong red/orange cast, so I’m using a light green wash to neutralize some of those warm tones. From there, I’ll experiment with different 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘀, and neutrals until the color lands in the same family as the client’s mantel and ceiling beams.

This leaf is my 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 before I tackle the entire table and its matching bench. And everything I need for this piece came in today, so now I can finally start working through the different color tests. 😉

A little color theory + a little experimentation = a much better match. 🎨🪵

✨ And that’s a wrap! ✨

Another beautiful piece of furniture brought out of storage, given a second chance, and ready to be enjoyed by the next generation. ❤️

This commission piece had been stuck in time—and unfortunately, it had the damage to prove it. 💔 Years of wear, a tired finish, and some pretty serious water damage had left this table looking like it had seen better days.

But with a little elbow grease, some careful repair, and a few smart staining and finishing techniques, those gorgeous mahogany tones came back to life. 😍 The beautiful grain is showing again, the finish has been refreshed, and this table has its purpose back.

And I can already picture what comes next…

☕ Lazy Sunday mornings
❤️ Family gatherings
…and, of course, those really important conversations that somehow always happen around a kitchen or dining table. 😉

Furniture like this was made to be lived with—not forgotten in storage. There’s something pretty special about taking a piece that has already been part of a family’s story and giving it the opportunity to keep making memories.

Restored. Refinished. Ready for its next chapter.

And now… onward to the next project! 🔨✨

SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN, AND THAT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT SOMETHING…

The kids are getting ready to go back to school, the days are starting to get a little cooler, and everyone is slowly getting back into their fall routines.

But one thing doesn't end when school does:

LEARNING.

I think that's one of the things I enjoy most about restoring furniture. Every piece teaches me something.

These chairs are a perfect example.

I finished restoring this set just this past week. The table they're paired with was also repaired and refinished in my shop last month, so this family is slowly getting their dining set brought back to life.

And the desk in the second photo? That was another project from last month. It's actually being used as a home office desk, not a child's homework desk — but it still got me thinking about how we're never really done learning, whether we're 8 or 100.

Every piece that comes through my shop has something different to teach me.

How it was built.

Why it failed.

What can be repaired instead of replaced.

And sometimes, how much life is still left in something that looks like it's ready for the trash.

THAT'S WHY I LOVE RESTORATION. 🥰

𝗜 𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧 𝗨𝗦𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗠𝗨𝗖𝗛 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘, 𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗜 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗜’𝗠 𝗔𝗧.

Like a lot of people right now, I know things are getting more expensive and everyone is feeling the squeeze in one way or another.

For me, that’s starting to hit the business pretty hard.

I’ve been putting 60+ hours a week into Kalchik Furniture & Hardware. I love what I do — restoring old furniture, repairing pieces that have been neglected, refinishing family heirlooms, and designing and building custom hardware.

This secretary desk was painted by the owner's mother and grandparents decades ago. As the old paint comes off, the beautiful quarter-sawn oak underneath is finally seeing the light again. This is just the beginning of the restoration—follow along to watch it come back to life!

🌿 This Week's Restoration Project 🌿

Every restoration tells a story, and this week's commission is already full of surprises!

This secretary desk and matching chair have been in our client's family since her grandparents owned them. Painted in the 1940s, they spent decades hiding what was underneath.

As stripping began, the desk revealed beautiful solid oak, while the chair surprised us even more—solid mahogany with its original hand-painted floral artwork still intact beneath the paint. After seeing the discovery, our client chose to preserve and restore the original artwork rather than paint over it again!

These are the moments that make furniture restoration so rewarding. Every layer can reveal another piece of history.

We'll be sharing the progress throughout the restoration, so be sure to follow along!
