General information

The smell of smoke has always been a pleasant reminder of camping, the onset of fall, childhood. After our house fire, the scent of smoke was upsetting. Every time we had to step inside the home after the fire, the smell clung to our skin, hair, clothes, even shoelaces. It was terrible. Smoke and fire became a negative association, and I didn't like this. So I decided to sort of reclaim what the fire had taken from me. I've decided to use fire to create something that could be called beautiful. I decided to invert the destructive force of fire and use the element to instead create something very neat and very functional. Thus, Phoenix Furnishings. There's a Japanese technique that preserves wood, hardens it, makes it insect resistant and fire retardant. The technique uses flame to scorch the surface of wood, and in the process it creates beautiful contrast in the wood grain. No harsh stains needed. With this technique, with some glass tabletops, reclaimed wood and these awesome, vintage tractor jacks and other salvaged bases, I'll be offering for sale coffee tables, end tables, bar tops, dining room tables and work tables suitable for the garage and other places where men and women like to create cool things. I want a portion of proceeds to go toward families impacted by fire, especially families who lose someone or lack insurance and resources. Those who buy this furniture will be helping fire victims. Another way to help will be to purchase the furniture and have it given to those affected by the fire. I plan on building pieces and donating them as well. The donated pieces will hopefully offer a tangible reminder that they will get through this. That what can destroy can also make things (and people) stronger. After a fire, you must stay strong. You must rise to face the day. Thus, the Phoenix. So that's the back story. On the surface, they're simply really neat pieces that are one-of-a-kind and heirloom quality. As with most things, dig a little deeper and you'll learn a little more. 🙂 Thanks for reading, Pat Post Script: "Phoenix" has two other connections to me. I went to two years of prep school in Phoenix. And my great-great grandfather and family in Denmark owned a hotel and restaurant called the Phoenix Hotel.
