A little life/business update from us. ❤️
Back in 2021, Tony refinished a few pieces of furniture for our own home, and we decided to see if maybe we could try refinishing other furniture and sell a piece or two on Marketplace. We honestly never expected it to turn into what it did. The furniture sold quickly, and before we knew it, Modern Fox Furniture became a real business.
For those who may not know, Tony deals with several severe chronic health conditions, including CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), small fiber neuropathy, Sjögren’s Syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis to name a few. He’s on SSDI because of his pain levels and physical limitations, and some days are much harder than others.
This business gave him something huge, though...purpose. At a time when he thought he couldn’t do much of anything, he realized he could still do woodworking in a way that worked for him, while also saving good furniture from ending up in landfills.
It gave him something to focus on besides the pain. It gave him the ability to work when his body allowed it, even if that meant weird hours, working barefoot in shorts in the middle of winter (yup, that's Tony! 😅), or needing to take several days off in a row due to his pain.
Last year, we started taking on custom refinishing projects because so many people were asking. We barely even advertised it, word of mouth and Google kept us busier than we expected. This year, the custom work has been most of our business.
But over the last few months, Tony’s health has gotten worse. His arthritis and back pain have become harder to manage, and we may be looking at another spine surgery again in the future. The physical side of this work is becoming more difficult and unpredictable for him. Because of that, we’ve made the decision to slow things down quite a bit.
For now, we won’t be taking on any custom refinishing projects, and we’ll be clearing out our current inventory, both finished pieces and unfinished projects we never got around to.
That said… Modern Fox Furniture isn’t disappearing.
Tony still loves refinishing furniture, and he’s incredibly talented at it. He’ll still work on pieces here and there when he’s feeling good enough to do it, just on a much smaller scale and on his own timeline.
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be posting a variety of finished and unfinished furniture pieces for sale as we work through our inventory. So if you’ve had your eye on our page for a while, stay tuned. 😊
We’ll also no longer be offering delivery services. Being able to personally deliver pieces to our customers was something we truly loved and took a lot of pride in, but with Tony’s health, it’s no longer something we can realistically continue doing.
We’ve met so many amazing people through this business. We’ve had customers drive across state lines for furniture, and that honestly still blows our minds. The support, encouragement, and kindness people have shown us over the last few years has meant more than we can say.
Modern Fox Furniture may look a little different moving forward, but it’s still part of us ❤️And who know, maybe it will evolve into something new someday.
