This is a great program for kids if you happen to be in the area. I volunteered to assist when Curtis Lumber Company held the event at my daughter's school (that's her in the picture 🙂). All the kids had a wonderful time building their tool boxes.

Every year my family and I go to the Northeastern Woodworkers Association Woodworkers Showcase in Saratoga. It is a great family event with lots to do and see, and lots of beautiful pieces of all different types.

This year I decided to enter one of my butterfly cutting boards into the competition and was honored by winning first place. It was a great experience winning an award at an event my family has attended for so long.

If you have a chance please check out the organization. They several different programs, offer many different types of woodworking classes, and have a grant program for woodworking education.

The sides of the bookcase are dry, no now it is time for the final glue-up for the front and back.

Just like the sides, the back slides into grooves and dados in the legs and supports, trapping it in place. It is not glued in to allow it to expand and contract with seasonal humidity changes.

After the pieces have been stained and allowed to dry it is time for the final glue-up!

I am using epoxy for some of the pieces because it dries slower, giving my more time to align the pieces.

First I glue up each side. Then I will glue up the front and back.

With all parts for the bookcase sanded, it is time for another dry fit then start the finishing process.

For this bookcase I used an alcohol based dye to provide the base color. After the dye dries I will stain each piece. The dye provides a much richer final color than stain alone.

The pictures shown are pieces that have been dyed, but not stained yet.

Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the year, the annual NWA lumber and tool auction. We had a great time and were able to win some great lumber. We left with four large walnut slabs along with some 2" thick white oak and maple.

All proceeds from the auction go to the NWA Fiske Fund, a grant program focused on woodworking education. To learn you can check out the link below.
