Blaise Gaston Furniture

Blaise Gaston Furniture I design and make unusual furniture: elegant, beautiful, and superbly built. To learn more about my art, send me a note: [email protected].

I've made furniture for 40 years, and I still love the way a finely finished surface reflects the light and enlivens the hand. The first cut through a slab of curly maple still exhilarates me. I design pieces to enrich spaces and spirits, to transmute joy and last a lifetime. I'd love to share my art with your home--just email [email protected] or call me for more information.

Now in its 31st year, the Artisans Studio Tour will take place November 8 + 9, 2025, in Central Virginia.

The Tour will feature 47 artisans across 24 studios, each creating unique, handmade works in their field of fine craft. This year, I'm selling my famous serving boards in a larger and more elegant design.

Visit me at Studio 7, along with Nancy Ross and Jan Elmore. I look forward to seeing you at my shop!

One weekend each year (November 12-13, 2016) in the Charlottesville area, a selection of local artisans open their studio doors and welcome you in to their unique spaces. It is quite an experience to see the working studios, the various tools the artisans use, and to learn about how and why they create what they do. This is an opportunity to ask questions, be inquisitive, share, and even see some demonstrations. The Tour also provides you with an excellent opportunity to purchase the work of talented area artisans as unique gifts or for your own collection.

This year marks the inauguration of the “emerging artisan” program. Adam McNeil, a potter mentored by Tom Clarkson, will show his artistic, functional pottery in Tom’s studio #13. It is the goal of the Studio Tour to encourage and support emerging artisans on their path to becoming professional.

The Tour is self-guided, free, and open to the public. Each studio on the Tour provides locally-sourced refreshments.

Please come and visit me and see our house and shop.

The past three weeks have been rough for us. Cali and I were diagnosed with breast cancer in early April. I had a mastectomy on April 14 and Cali had a double mastectomy on April 21. We are both healing well. All of our lymph nodes were fine and in both cases the doctors say it is stage 1 and we will be fine. I meet with my oncologist on Monday to learn about the next steps and Cali will meet with hers the next week. I have been one week ahead of her for the whole experience and feel like a wise elder letting her know what will happen next.
The outpouring of love and help has been astonishing. Thanks to everybody.
Love,
Blaise

Henry Moore is one of my favorite artists. We share a love of natural forms; his monumental bronze statues, which can be found in public spaces all over the world, are often abstract human figures.

I’m pretty sure they don’t make Valentine’s cards for this, but I’ve been in love with woodworking since I made my first cherry wood candlestick at age 17.

Which really begs the true love question: which comes first, the art or the artisan?

I read that today is “Inspire your Heart with Art Day” so I’m going to take a break from my routine and page through a book of sculpture by Santiago Calatrava, one of my favorite designers. What will you do to celebrate?
