Starting off the new year with another project completed! Custom laundry room cabinets to replace the existing ones that had to be torn out to repair a leaking pipe in the wall.

Getting close to being done with our most recent project…custom upper and lower cabinets for a laundry room. All that’s left to do is install the door hardware, make the cutout for the drop in sink, and some final detailing/cleaning. Exited to see this one completed and installed.

Put the final touches on another project today! This one was a custom bar with built in kegerator, mini fridge, and wine bottle storage. The bar looks great, but I have to say the customers decorations are what really tie it together.

Keeping with the theme of looking back on some of my first projects…

This is the first table I ever made at the age of 15. At the time my parent’s house had an upstairs loft/living room and I thought it would be a good idea to make a coffee table for it. So, I gathered up some scrap wood, screws, and spray paint we had laying around the garage and put this piece together. Despite almost throwing it away multiple times, there’s something in me that won’t bring myself to do it.

Now at 25 I’m still making tables…just a little bit better now. Safe to say I’ve learned a few things over the past 10 years, and hopefully I’ll know even more in the next 10. It’s always nice looking back on these past projects to see how far things have come.

Was going through some old memory boxes today when I found these…they are the first things I ever made out of wood when I was 13 years old. They are called handplanes, and they are worn on the leading hand when body surfing and they keep you lifted above the water.

At the time I had seen other people at the beach using them and thought to myself…I can definitely build one of those. So, I asked my parents to buy me an orbital sander and a hand plane from Lowe’s, grabbed some scrap wood laying around in my parents garage from an old shelving unit, made myself a little work bench, and got to work.

With no idea how to do woodworking I slowly started to figure it out and eventually improved my original design to incorporate an adjustable velcro strap (which I would sew by hand) as well as use a higher quality piece of wood.

Now all these years later it’s fun to look back at past projects to see a physical representation of how far things have come.

One year ago today, John and I were working in the shop late at night when a stray dog wandered in. He was just skin and bones with cuts and open wounds all over. Unsure what to do we FaceTimed our mom and dad who told us to bring him over to their house for a bath and some food/water. In the following days we took him to the vet for his necessary surgeries, as well as looked for the potential owner…which ended with no success. We ultimately decided that we wanted to keep him and that’s when we gave him the name Koa.

Koa is the Hawaiian word for brave and fearless warrior. It is evident that he’s been through a battle or two. Koa is also a native Hawaiian tree, which makes some of the most sought after wood. Very fitting, as he wandered into a wood shop.

Starting up another project this week! Making a custom coffee table out of an old tree root. Cleaned it up with the pressure washer and cut the rough template for the top. Currently going through the tedious process of hand planing the roots down, to enable the top to be completely flush with the natural “bowl” feature in the stump. Super excited to see how this one turns out!

As of last week we’ve officially been in our workshop for one year! A big thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. Excited to see what year two has in store for us.

The rough design for the laundry room cabinets are done! Next thing for us to do is break apart the design so we can start putting together the totals for our quote. Once the totals are added up we’ll confirm material prices with our supplier and then we can send the invoice off to the customer for (hopefully) approval.

Making some good progress on our custom bar order. Got the boxes and trim pieces built. Next up is the countertop and drawers. Always nice to see these projects go from concept to a physical piece in front of you.
