🌹 Before the roses come the soil!

We’re getting our future rose garden ready at our Oakley property—one cartload of mulch at a time. With help from Robin and Fred, we’re covering the soil ahead of the winter rains and giving the garden a head start before planting.

Cardboard helps suppress the existing grass, while mulch holds moisture and provides protective cover for the life beneath our feet. 🌱🪱

Patience is part of pre-composting. After turning the scraps and screened mulch together in the tumbler, we let the batch sit for about three weeks before screening. This is a preparation stage for worm feed, not finished castings.

Give scraps a mulch partner. We combine fruit and vegetable scraps, including cucumbers and fruit past its best, with mulch screened to ½ inch. That screening step prepares the starting material before the batch goes into the tumbler.

Worms love microgreens, too! We enjoy the harvest, and our composting worms enjoy the leftover stems and roots—turning them into vermicast to help grow the next crop. That’s our kind of recycling!

Watering and temperature checks go together. In this particular rick, daily watering was aimed at about six minutes, and the temperature was checked where the worms were gathering, around 80°F. That reading describes the active worm zone, not the whole rick; checking different spots can help show how conditions vary.

Let the worms follow the fresh food. Instead of feeding along the whole row, Delta Worms placed fresh material in a sleeve along the active side of the rick. The food and moisture created a working zone that encouraged the worms to move horizontally toward it.

Small, steady additions add up. In Delta Worms’ first four weeks, about one-eighth of a cubic yard of material was added each week. As new material went on, the original mulch settled and became more compact, so the rick’s shape changed as both layers built up.
