Add a layer to your raised beds or mix into containers, then let the biology do the heavy lifting this summer.

If you want strong yields in July and August, now is the time to top-dress with compost and worm castings.

Just spread it along the row or around each plant, lightly scratch it in, and water well.

Your soil microbes will get to work long before the temperatures spike.

Thinking about starting a worm bin? Late spring and early summer are perfect in the Northern California Delta. Temperatures are warm but not extreme, so worms can settle into their new home quickly. We’ve got composting worms and vermicompost to get you started strong.

Those strawberry tops, coffee filters, and lettuce cores don’t have to go in the trash. Feed them to your worms, and in a few months you’ll be feeding your flowers, herbs, and tomatoes with the vermicompost they create. Closing the loop at home is one of the easiest ways to support healthier soil in our Delta communities.

Did you know your composting worms can double their population in as little as 60–90 days under the right conditions?

Our latest blog, “Composting Worms' Life Cycle: How Worms Reproduce and Grow,” breaks down what’s actually happening in your bin, from tiny cocoons to hard-working adults:

*How hermaphroditi worms mate and exchange s***m every 7–10 days in ideal conditions.

*The lemon-shaped cocoons (about match-head size) that hold 1–5 baby worms each.

*How cocoons hatch in about 21–30 days when moisture and temperature are just right.

*Why juveniles hit maturity in 6–8 weeks and then start the whole cycle over again.

*What happens to population growth when space, food, or moisture gets limited.

If you want a thriving bin that produces more castings (without constantly buying more worms), understanding their life cycle is the key.
