We want to take a moment to recognize the importance of small manufacturing.
Small manufacturers do far more than make products. They help keep money moving through the communities they call home. When people support local makers, the impact does not stop at the workshop door. The craftspeople earning those wages spend them nearby. They buy groceries at local stores, support neighborhood businesses, raise families, send their children to local schools, and contribute to the local tax base.
In cities that have lived through deindustrialization, even small manufacturers can make a meaningful difference. They help steady neighborhoods, create good jobs, and restore a sense of pride and purpose that comes from making tangible, lasting goods.
Workshop Detroit is part of that story. The company builds furniture from reclaimed wood and steel, including dining tables, coffee tables, butcher block countertops, and more. Every piece is made in Detroit on St. Antoine Street in the city’s Milwaukee Junction neighborhood. That matters.
It matters that the work happens here. It matters that each piece carries a story. And it matters that what people bring into their homes was made by local hands, with real care and craftsmanship.
Small manufacturing also shows young people that making things is still a path worth choosing. It shows that skilled work matters, that craftsmanship has value, and that building something real can still be a meaningful career. That is worth supporting, promoting, and fighting for.
