The city more than a decade ago made a pledge to resolve homelessness in our community. Instead of resolving it, they are now criminalizing it.

While for years homelessness in our community was hidden in the woods along the rivers, it has now escalated to unprecedented levels. There are escalating prices for homes, groceries, fuel and other basic necessities. Gentrification has forced others out of low-income housing areas.

While many of us are fortunate to have a roof over our heads, there are hundreds, if not thousands, in central Iowa who do not.

It can be easy to criticize or condemn a situation in which one is unfamiliar or wouldn’t have chosen. Compassionate understanding and help are what is called for, not punishment and condemnation.
