Gentrification threatens tattoo-removal startup serving at-risk youth, says owner

DENVER - Denver-based tattoo removal startup Tattoo Emergency 911 today launched an online petition calling for Denver's Board of Adjustment for Zoning Appeals to grant a special exception for the storage of Tattoo Emergency's mobile tattoo removal vehicle - a converted ambulance - on the private residential property of Tattoo Emergency owner, Jesus Bujanda. The case is part of a broader, ongoing conversation in Denver about gentrification and its effects and the lack of support from city administration for businesses and individuals that are affected.

In 2017, after receiving a complaint, the city cited Bujanda for having what he calls a "commercial vehicle on residential property." Denver's Board of Adjustment for Zoning Appeals says that Bujanda's "specialized vehicle" is not allowed to be stored on Bujanda's residential Park Hill property unless it is rendering services. Bujanda was routed to several agencies and finally advised to move out of Denver as a proposed solution.

"I have lived in Denver all my life and the advice from the city was that I would probably be better off in Commerce City or Arvada," said Bujanda. "That feels like gentrification to me."

Bujanda's clients are at-risk populations - former adult and juvenile offenders - who seek a fresh start. Bujanda works with government agencies in Denver and Greeley to offer services affordably for those who otherwise would not be able to afford the service.

"A majority of the work that we do is with juveniles who want to change the path they are on and can't afford it on their own," said Bujanda.

A hearing on Bujanda's appeal is set for February 27.

HERE IS THE CONTEST
I have 50 boxes ready to send out; one of the
first set of 25 and the second set of 25 boxes has a $10 Starbucks gift card that one person will win.
I have preselected one number from 1 to 25 and one number from 26 to 50. I will reveal the number when I reach the 25 th person and when I reach the 50th person. That person will win a $50 gift card from King Soopers or Regal Cinema. At the end of the contest will go live and pick one name out of a hat and that person will win a $300 gift certificate for the services of there choice from saveourskin or Tattooemergency911.com.
PM me your name, address, and email and I will send you out a box and issue you a number. To qualify for the contest you must post a pic of where you placed the business cards and one of the stickers and tag me in the post. Please be careful where you put the sticker as not to get me in trouble with anyone.
The contest will start on September 21st and end on December 20th or when the 50th box is posted. We will also post a pic of the numbers I picked with Sundays news paper September 15th. When we hit the 25th person and the 50th person I reveal each number. If the contest is successful we will run it again and in spring.
