Clay Modeling Table - Fin 2020 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This project revolved around learning to cut atypical, novel joints, for connecting hardwood. This process involved developing machining fixtures as well as learning new tool extensions for our CNC machine. Having learned these new angled machining techniques, the team now had access to a great number of joinery methods.

Putting in work on the plethora of neuron pieces for our Neuron Lamp (coming very soon)!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
After countless hours of machining came endless hours of hand sanding (both wet and dry). Then coated with an aluminum varnish to give off a shiny finish⚡️

Introducing; Myceliar Table.

Our first attempt at machining the top of Myceliar failed because the design turned out to have too much variability to support the extreme accuracy required. The lines you see are intended to be translucent Oak, machined to a thickness of 17 thousanths of an inch, with a tolerance of 2 thousandths of an inch. We have to go back to the drawing boards and strategize new approaches which prevent flex and thermal expansion of the wood. This chase of precision is part of the novel Nicks House process 💭

Heart of Charcoal Chair - 2021 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s been a long time coming with this beauty but she’s finally complete! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This meticulously, hand crafted, one-of-a-kind wooden chair required that the team dive into unexplored techniques and experimental strategies. At first glance, the chair appears to be painted or dyed, when it is in fact, neither. We instead took a charring approach in order to reduce long term wear and tear a well as create a more unified hue. Take note of the layered quality this achieves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Another explorative approach demonstrated we the implementation of compound inlays. The Wenge wood was cut precisely to fit inside the aluminum inlays, which was then merged with the chair. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Lastly, this is the first upholstery project we have executed. Developing our own upholstery methods will unlock unparalleled design flexibility moving forward 🪐⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Have you attempted this charring technique to produce color on wood? Instead of staining or painting your next wooden project - give this a shot!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Staining and/or painting simply applies a thin layer of color to the top of the wood; the charring technique creates an overall more cohesive, profound, and saturated tone. Not to mention, it’s long term much more resistant to weathering as oppose to any other technique 👾

Introducing some funky fresh patterns that will be present in our ongoing project; Co***ne Chairs, with the intent of producing a set of 4. Coming April 2021. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

These chairs will be entirely constructed in house as the team has taken on the challenge of learning to upholster fabric. We will also be implementing an epoxy-to-wood technique which enables the chair to give off a translucent energy, while still being rendered with vibrant and deep colors 🔵 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once complete, you will blast 🔙 to the past with these 70’s style chairs
