Black granite shows its veining best when the white runs in long sweeps, and this kitchen has plenty of it. The backsplash behind the sink goes full height, counter to cabinet, so the stone carries up the wall instead of stopping at a few inches. The corner of the counter in the foreground is rounded, not square. Dark stone also changes with the light: the same veins that stand out under a window can nearly disappear at night. Black granite sitting on a bright yellow cabinet front is not a combination you forget.

The top runs flat and polished across the bar, then the stone drops straight down the face -- a full vertical panel flush to the base. That kind of wrap takes precise cuts at the corner so the joint disappears into the profile.

The surface behind it carries the same stone across a long run of service counter, open kitchen visible through the pass.

Two undermount sinks, one continuous top, cream shaker cabinets below. The slab runs wide enough that the space between the two cutouts still reads as a single uninterrupted surface.

The veining on this quartz is subtle -- fine gray lines moving across a white ground. At vanity height, that pattern sits at eye level, so it does get looked at closely.

Next to a pool, the countertop gets sun, splashes and wet hands all day. Granite is a natural stone that holds up to that kind of exposure, and the gold, brown and black speckle in this one hides water spots and the occasional crumb better than a solid color would. The top here runs the full length of the bar, set on a brick base with stainless doors below. A Plus Granite & Marble Works, DeLand, since 2007. (386) 736-8977

White quartz with fine gray veining, running the full length of a long low cabinet. The surface sits flat and even against the wall. That thin line where stone meets cabinet is where the caulk gun goes -- and that is what you see here, a guy on his knees finishing that joint by hand.

One bold vein can carry a whole vanity top. Here the gray and gold line runs across the white quartz and into the sink area, and the backsplash follows the two walls. Quartz is non-porous, so it handles daily soap, toothpaste and cosmetics without sealing. A Plus Granite & Marble Works, DeLand, Florida, since 2007. Call (386) 736-8977.
