The boys are back in town‼️and this time sightings were a lot closer to home than in the past few years🌿!! The award for first manatee sighting of the year goes to Erik Nelson🏆, who saw the animal on April 3rd outside of Weeks Bay! Shortly after that, on April 17th, Wesley Conner saw a group of 3 in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta 🏆(photo and video here)!!

Keep an eye out and please report all of your manatee sightings to our network, especially as more animals make their way west along the Florida Panhandle and Alabama coasts!

Its time for another ✨Research Highlight✨ to celebrate citizen science month!! Today we're focusing on some of the work our Alabama Marine Mammal Stranding Network has done!! The ALMMSN was created in 2011! Since then the Carmichael lab team has been at the forefront of all marine mammal strandings in Alabama and has assisted in events across the coast from rescue operations to necropsies to better understand threats to marine mammals in our area and providing insight on potential threats to human health as well! Ever wonder about how many carcasses we may be missing (or our carcass detection rate)? Well so did we!! Check out the graphic below to learn about how we studied this using decoy dolphins!
