CABINET SHOWROOM FIELD REPORT
Brought to you live from the cabinet showroom at Lux218, where a woman has been standing in front of two door samples for twenty-six minutes asking her husband if "Alabaster" looks different from "Chantilly Lace." They are, in fact, the same white. They are also entirely different. Both things are true. Welcome to cabinets.
Today in the cabinet showroom:
A homeowner just announced she wants something "timeless," "simple," and "not too trendy" — and is holding a Pinterest board containing 47 kitchens that have nothing in common except that one of them is hers in three months and she doesn't know which one yet.
Meanwhile, a husband has asked, in a tone of dawning concern, why a single cabinet door costs more than his lawn mower. He is being gently introduced to the concept of "full custom." His face has changed. We are giving him a moment.
Over by the door samples, a couple is having The White Debate. He thinks white is white. She has lined up six samples and named them like horses: "Alabaster is the warm one," "Pure White is the cold one," "Simply White is the moody one." He has gone very quiet. Authorities recommend leaving them alone.
Down at the inset display, somebody just learned what "inset" means and has emotionally committed to it before learning what it costs. We are circling back to that in the spring.
In other developments, a homeowner has asked if she can have "shaker but a little different," which in cabinet design now means:
Shaker
With a tiny detail
That will add eight weeks to lead time
Also, three separate clients today have used the phrase "I don't want anything weird" while requesting a fluted door, a reeded door, and a door with a brass inlay. Definitions of "weird" vary widely.
A suspicious homeowner has been quietly opening and closing the same soft-close drawer for ten minutes with an expression of pure, holy reverence. She has just discovered the future. Nothing will be the same for her again.
And finally, somebody just asked if a pull-out trash cabinet is "really worth it," proving once again that the most life-changing element of any kitchen renovation is, somehow, always the place where the garbage goes.
We will continue monitoring conditions.
I'm Lily Bell, reporting from the cabinet showroom, where seven shades of white are currently arranged on the counter like suspects in a lineup.
