The Livingston County Health Department is reporting that a raccoon in the Town of Lima tested positive for rabies today, June 16, 2026. The raccoon was on the property of Camp Lima during the German Festival on Sunday, June 14, 2026. One person was potentially exposed to rabies virus by this raccoon and will receive treatment to prevent infection. The raccoon was believed to be a nursing mother.

Rabies is a deadly virus that attacks the central nervous system in mammals. In Livingston County it is most often found in raccoons, skunks, and bats. All mammals, including unvaccinated dogs, cats, and farm animals are at risk for getting rabies. There is no way to tell if an animal is rabid just by looking at it. Wild or feral animals should always be avoided.
Signs of rabies in wildlife can include:
* inability to walk
* appearance of โdrunkennessโ
* unwillingness to drink water or eat
* drooling
* aggressive behavior
* any significant change in temperament
