“So... What’s the difference between post and beam and timber frame?”
Great question, and good news for you: you’ve asked the experts!
Post and beam and timber frame can often be used interchangeably, but they’re not actually the same thing.
POST & BEAM
🔸 Uses metal connector plates and bolts to join heavy timber posts and beams. This is faster to assemble and more forgiving on the job site
🔸 Allows for more design flexibility since the connections are adjustable during construction. This means it’s easier to modify if plans change mid-build
🔸 This is the method DC Structures uses in our pre-engineered kits. It’s the same heavy Douglas fir timbers, cleaner assembly, and a faster path from concept to finished frame
TIMBER FRAME
🔸 Uses traditional mortise and tenon joinery and wooden pegs to lock the structure together. This means no metal hardware; entirely wood-on-wood connections
🔸 The older of the two methods, dating back centuries. The joinery is a craft unto itself, and the point is to show it off
🔸 More labor-intensive and time-consuming than post and beam, but produces the same stunning, dramatic exposed joinery details
Both methods use the same quality timber. Both produce the same open, exposed-timber aesthetic. The fundamental difference really lies in the connections, and depending on your project, timeline, and budget, one will serve you better than the other.
