Mistakes to Avoid When Designing a New Kitchen Layout

Designing a kitchen is exciting — but one misstep can affect the space’s functionality, flow, and even resale value. Here are the most common kitchen layout mistakes to avoid, and how to get it right the first time:

Ignoring the Work Triangle: The work triangle — sink, stove, and refrigerator — should form an efficient path. Avoid placing these too far apart or obstructing them with islands or cabinetry. Keep each leg of the triangle between 4–9 feet and ensure a clear path between them.

Poor Storage Planning: It’s easy to focus on aesthetics and forget about practical storage. Insufficient or poorly placed storage leads to clutter and frustration. Try to maximize vertical storage, use pull-out drawers, deep cabinets, and incorporate pantry space where possible.

Skimping on Counter Space: Not allocating enough counter space — especially near key appliances — can hamper prep and cooking. Try to aim for at least 36 inches of continuous counter space for prep work, and allow landing areas near the stove, sink, and fridge.

Overlooking Lighting: Relying only on overhead lighting can create shadows and reduce visibility in work areas. Use layered lighting — ambient (ceiling), task (under-cabinet), and accent (pendant or decorative). Good lighting improves both function and ambiance.

Inadequate Ventilation: A beautiful kitchen won’t feel that way if smells linger or grease accumulates due to poor ventilation. Invest in a quality range hood vented to the outside. Don’t settle for recirculating fans unless necessary.

Blocking Traffic Flow: Islands or poorly placed cabinets can obstruct walkways or cause congestion around key areas. Leave at least 42 inches of clearance around islands and walkways to ensure smooth movement, especially in shared spaces.

Forgetting About Trash and Recycling: These are often an afterthought but can become daily annoyances if poorly located. Integrate pull-out trash and recycling bins near prep areas or sinks for easy access.

Not Planning for Appliances: Failing to account for appliance sizes and door swings can lead to installation issues or cramped spaces. Measure everything — including appliance clearances — and ensure there's space for doors to open fully.

Going Too Trendy: Trendy choices might look great today, but they can age quickly or reduce resale appeal. Use trends in accessories or accent features, while keeping major elements (cabinets, counters) timeless.

DIY Without Expert Input: Designing a kitchen yourself without professional insight can lead to costly mistakes and regrets. Consult with a kitchen designer or contractor early in the process to ensure functionality, code compliance, and efficiency.

A kitchen should be both beautiful and functional. Avoiding these common mistakes can help you create a space that’s efficient, comfortable, and built to last.

Open Shelving vs. Closed Cabinets: Pros and Cons

Choosing between open shelving and closed cabinets can dramatically affect both the style and functionality of your kitchen. Whether you're building a new kitchen or renovating an old one, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each can help you make the best decision for your space.

Open Shelving allows the space to be Visually Airy and Open. It makes small kitchens feel bigger and more breathable. It also gives an easy Access so that it is easy for you to grab frequently used items quickly—no doors to open or close. It is great for Display and perfect for showcasing stylish dishes, glassware, or decor. It is budget-Friendly and often less expensive than upper cabinets in terms of materials and labor. This look is very much in Trend and fits well with modern, farmhouse, Scandinavian, or rustic styles.

However there are certain cons to it as well. Since it is open, it is more prone to accumulate dust and thus, it requires Frequent Cleaning. The exposed shelves collect dust and grease, especially near the stove. It can look Cluttered and thus requires consistent organization to look good—no hiding messes. It has limited Storage Functionality and is not ideal for storing unattractive or miscellaneous items.

On the other hand, Closed Cabinets not only conceal Clutter but in them, you can store everything from cereal boxes to cleaning supplies—out of sight, out of mind. It helps maximize Storage and keeps dust, grease, and sunlight away from food and dishes. It allows for tailored, efficient storage solutions (drawers, dividers, lazy Susans). It provides a cleaner Aesthetic and maintain uniformity keeps the kitchen looking polished and organized. However, it can make your Kitchen feel Smaller as a wall of cabinets can visually shrink the space. Also, it has a higher Cost especially if you’re choosing custom cabinetry or premium materials. Since it is a closed surface, you can’t showcase pretty dishes or heirlooms without glass inserts or open sections.

However, you can get the best of both Worlds by Mixing & Matching the best if both styles for example: Open shelves above the sink or stove for everyday items and Closed cabinets below for storage and concealment. This hybrid approach offers both aesthetics and practicality.

You can also save some money by going for open cabinets however, if you are ready to make a long term investment then in that case you can easily opt for closed shelving.

The best Way to Update Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchens are usually one of the first rooms in the house to begin showing their age. As a high-traffic room used by the whole family, even the most modern kitchen will reveal signs of wear and tear sooner or later. While a complete kitchen renovation can easily cost a small fortune, there are plenty of ways you can update your old kitchen cabinets and still keep costs low.

The easiest and most affordable trick to glowing up the kitchen is with a fresh coat of paint. Paint is perfect for situations where the furnishing is in good nick but is simply looking a little worn. Choose colours that blend well together and consider using a light-coloured palette to brighten the room or make a small space appear bigger than it is.

Don’t underestimate the power of lighting. Not only does it promote safety by illuminating areas where cooking tasks are taking place, it also gives the kitchen a lift and enhances the look of the entire space. Mounting lights under cabinets and updating old lighting fixtures with trendy new designs will transform the room into a modern kitchen. Installation is easy enough to do yourself – provided you know a thing or two about electricity.

A simple swap out of the handles and k***s can do wonders for updating the look of your kitchen cabinets. This is also a great tip to apply to your outdoor BBQ kitchen when it begins to wear. Just remember to match the new handles with the characteristics of your existing cabinets so they don’t clash.

If there’s no way to update your old kitchen cabinets and they can’t be saved, it might be time to refit new cabinetry in their place. This is a much more affordable way to modernize the look without having to submit to a complete renovation.

You need to install Tall Cabinets in your kitchen now!

Tall units are a great way to enhance your overall kitchen look along with aesthetically upgrading your kitchen cabinetry and acting as a great storage units that extend from the floor to the ceiling, providing ample vertical storage space. These are particularly useful for maximizing storage in kitchens with limited floor space. Here are some common types of tall units you might see in a kitchen:

Tall Pantry Units are great for storing dry goods, canned items, spices, and other pantry essentials. They often come with pull-out shelves or baskets for easy access.

Utility Cabinets are also available that are amazing for storage purposes - like they can be used for cleaning supplies, brooms, or even small appliances. They can be fitted with shelves or hooks for organizing various items.

You can also go for a tall unit that houses built-in ovens or microwaves, allowing these appliances to be installed at eye level. This setup makes cooking more convenient and keeps the countertop clear.

Tall cabinets can be designed to house refrigerators or freezers, creating a streamlined and integrated look in the kitchen.
Tall glass-fronted cabinets can be used for displaying dishes, glassware, or decorative items, combining function with style.

Open cabinets are very trendy and much check this out!

Open Cabinets have become increasingly popular in modern interior design for several reasons, primarily because they provide a fresh, airy look and a sense of accessibility. Here are a few reasons why open cabinets are trending:

Open cabinets create a sense of space and make a room feel larger. By removing cabinet doors, the area feels less closed off, allowing light to flow through more freely, which is especially desirable in smaller spaces.

With open cabinets, everything is visible and within reach. No need to open doors or drawers—items like dishes, glasses, or kitchen essentials are easy to grab. This is especially helpful in kitchens where you want quick access while cooking or entertaining.

Open shelving allows you to show off stylish kitchenware, dishware, or decorative items, creating a more personalized and curated space. You can use it to display colorful plates, mugs, or other decorative pieces, adding a design element to the room.

Open cabinets fit well with minimalist design trends. The uncluttered, clean look aligns with a desire for simplicity, where the focus is on showcasing carefully selected items rather than hiding them behind doors.

Without the constraints of cabinet doors, it’s easier to change the look of your space. You can switch out items, organize in different ways, and even use baskets or trays to keep things neat while still being able to see them.

Open cabinets can encourage more organization since everything is visible. People may feel more inclined to keep their items neat and orderly to avoid a messy look.

There’s something very trendy about open shelving—it’s often associated with modern and contemporary interior styles. Many people enjoy the look of open cabinets because it feels fresh and on-trend.

Are you considering open cabinets, do let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Wood colored cabinets are so popular

Wood-colored cabinets have made a big comeback, and for good reason. Their popularity reflects a shift toward warmer, more natural interiors after years of all-white kitchens dominating trends.

Wood adds organic texture and warmth that makes the kitchen feel more inviting. It Pairs well with stone countertops, metal hardware, and neutral walls.

Wood tones range from light oak to deep walnut, making them versatile for Modern minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired and Traditional or rustic kitchens.

Unlike some trendy cabinet colors, natural wood doesn’t feel dated. It ages well and develops a patina, adding character over time.

It pairs Beautifully with Modern Elements like You can mix wood with white uppers for a contemporary look. You can pair with black hardware, quartz countertops, or matte fixtures to strike a modern-classic balance.

Wood cabinets, especially those with a grain or medium tone, hide dirt, smudges, and wear better than white or high-gloss finishes.

Unlike painted MDF, solid wood or wood veneers can often be refinished, stained, or touched up, adding longevity.

Hope this helps.
