Bring a piece of your story home.

In 1904, atop a hill in Northeast Arkansas, these young walnut trees watched the construction of a rapidly growing church.. Watching generation upon generation pass through this parish, the trees eventually had to come down to make room for church growth. Having grown up under these trees, and raised children of his own beneath it’s shade, my client wanted to see the trees live on. After securing a portion of the lumber, he brought it to my shop, where together, we discussed design elements until we came up with what we ideally believed would compliment his space… and what a beautiful space it is!
Nothing in my line of work is more fulfilling than bringing a piece to life, with wood that has such honest sentimental value. A piece like this, is truly what we consider intentional furniture.. and this project will always hold a special piece of real estate in my memory.

Honest. Intentional. Furniture.

I’ll take straight lines and a natural finish any day. Throughout the design process, I felt that keeping the lines simple on this mid-century inspired bookshelf, would allow the wood to speak for itself. The continuous grain drawer fronts up the ante on the natural character of this piece, and the waterfall edges give a clean transition in the mitered corners.

This was a really fun build!

Lead a quiet life; and work with your hands.

The last couple of years have been nose to the grindstone, cranking work out, while perpetually remaining a student of my craft. I’ve been rather absent from social media, just trying to keep up with the daily work.. MEANWHILE, our new marketing team has been busy building out our new website, reworking our branding, and working on new t-shirt designs! New horizons are beginning to take shape, and I’m excited to continue sharing the next leg of the journey with you guys!

With simplicity in mind, I wanted to allow this straight grained white oak to speak for itself.. straight lines and subtle tapers felt like the right aesthetic for this piece. I felt that insetting the doors would help to dampen the attention drawn to the cabinet doors, themselves... allowing the piece to be taken in as a whole, rather than one aspect drawing too much attention.
Once the design was complete, my mind was freed up to focus on the joinery.

The best conversations happen around a table. More specifically.. a round table! I got a surprising amount of questions about the round table in the background of last week’s post. Seven feet of crowd gathering goodness! It seats 10 people, so no one is left out, and no one has to sit on the end. The northeastern white pine matches the material that was used in the home’s construction.. and I still can’t get over how gorgeous this home is.
