The home we moved into last fall had two bathrooms - one was bad, the other was worse. The bad one just needed some cosmetic touch-up - deep cleaning, fresh paint, and a new medicine cabinet. The worse one needed everything but the tub ripped out and replaced. New sheetrock, new plumbing, new floor, new cabinets, new toilet, and new hardware. I'm about ten days in working weekends and evenings, but I've finally gotten almost everything put back together. It certainly looks a lot nicer now, but the biggest improvement? My little buddy can finally wash his hands without help. Proof, I hope, that accessibility doesn't have to mean compromising on aesthetics.

Last few pics are the "before". It was hard to capture just how awful this bathroom was. Glad it's replaced now!

New bathroom cabinet in cherry. Sliding door with curly maple panel. Shiplap maple backboards. A huge improvement over the particleboard and cardboard atrocity that was here when we moved in.

My brass bin pulls came in early this week, so I was happy to finally call this project finished. I've been planning the island build since we first bought the house in November. I knew I wanted a piece that looked more like a work table than a cabinet, but we still needed ample storage space. I think I pulled it off rather well, with a pair of wide, deep drawers below three shallower drawers.

The base is made with quartersawn white oak - probably my favorite timber and an appropriate choice for an early-20th c. home. The top is spalted, curly pear that came from my cousin's house, just a few doors down. The drawers are solid quartersawn yellow pine. The island was designed to allow three stools to tuck in out of the way.

Looking forward to getting this new island in my kitchen. One of the rare pieces I get to make for myself. Good quartersawn white oak is hard to beat.

Delivered to yesterday. Not in its final resting place, as their new kitchen is still under construction, but already in use. I drew inspiration from Shaker furniture and old country cupboards. Adjusted the original design on the fly to accommodate a single-board center panel. The piercing in the upper panel was at the request of the client and I think it fits with the style well. Very pleased with the result.

Finally delivered this butcher block to this afternoon. Without a doubt one of my favorite pieces. It's taller than a traditional butcher block - 38" high, versus 30" - for more modern usage. But the design is old school. It's solid maple, all end grain, and weighs in at over 250 lbs.

The tree came from my old property. The top was damaged by a storm right after after we moved there in winter 2017. I finally felled it and milled it into lumber in 2019, and it was the very last piece that I finished in my old workshop. It feels like this piece encapsulates so much of my time at the old property. Very glad to have it go to clients who are also friends, so I can still visit it from time to time :)

Saying goodbye to this Federal style walnut desk today. It's been finished for weeks while the owner (who lives a few hours away) and I have tried to work out a good time for pickup. Of all of my furniture commissions, this is the one that I will miss the most. It's sat front and center in our living area this fall, beckoning visitors for a closer look.

Computer work might actually be fraction more enjoyable if I were perched in front of this beauty. Alas, the cobbler's kids go barefoot, and a busy furniture maker such as I can scarcely afford to set aside two to three weeks to build one of these for myself.

I designed and built these cherry vanities for a client this spring but never shared photos of the finished renovation. They created a wonderful space, and it was a pleasure to be involved in this project. I love the pop of warm color that the natural cherry brings to the neutral pallette of paint and marble tile.

Some killer grain in these quartersawn sycamore cheeseboards for the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. This tree was removed from the old courthouse in Danielsville during renovations a couple years ago.

I still have lot of lumber left! Feel free to reach out if you're interested in commissioning a piece of furniture from this beautiful wood. It would make a stunning dining tabletop 🔥.

Milled up a few ugly cherry logs this morning. They're about 2 years old and the sapwood is spongy and useless, but the heartwood is still perfectly fine. I wish I'd gotten to them sooner, but somehow I always seem to end up with more logs than time.

It's almost pine season again. I do my best to avoid sawing pine in the summer months. October-April is the best time to mill it in this climate. During the summer months, fungal growth goes into overdrive and it's tough to dry without getting mold on the surface and blue stain beneath. Neither are particularly problematic, but they aren't welcome either. The cooler months slow down microbial growth enough to dry the wood without the unwelcome guests. This stack of 1x12s will become board and batten barn siding.

I'm still waiting for the leather inlay for the drop-front, but aside from the lid this piece is done. I moved it into the house for now so I can start a cabinet job on Tuesday.

This piece is 100% sourced from Madison County timbers. The walnut for the frame is from Still Water Farm, maple for the gallery from a home in Colbert, sycamore drawer fronts from the courthouse sycamore, and poplar and oak secondary woods are from my own backyard.
